cyril7: Hi, sounds like things wont improve till a cabinet arrives, around 2.5km is where ADSL1 and 2+ meet speed wise.

Cyril

Here's my stats, line attenuation is similar to openmedia. According to the Telecom wholesale map I'm not getting cabinetised... I'm guessing then that this is going to be as fast as I'm getting for the foreseeable future?

If you're 40m from a cabinet and getting 39dB line attenuation you need to look at fixing your house wiring.

Why do people fail to look at their wiring before going out on a rampage against [insert any ISP name here]?

Yep do a test at the demarc or as close as possible, with all the house wiring removed from circuit.

Its also possible that you have been left on the exchange I have come across a number of instances where by total oversight a customers line was not moved to the cabinet. 39dB and 3km of cable is around the right number, so if you have no change in attenuation when you do a full isolation test then I would suspect your still on the exchange and get Chorus to move it.

Ok Techs at slingshot said they'll send out Chours to switch me back to "Telecom equipment".
So just waiting on what happens there.

I've been looking at diffrent ISP's as my contract with slingshot ends in NOV. Orcon offer a
"$149 full wiring install - dedicated broadband splitter will be installed" would this help any wiring and speed issues im currently getting now ? and what speeds can i expect ?

Ahh, didnt take into account that you were on on Orcon+ connection, as you will have read previously in these threads midspan injection issues is probably what is causing most of your issues. Keep us posted.

Cheers

I've just had a look at the telecom wholesale map tonight. You can know view where VDSL cabinets are going in now. Now, it seems I'm about 2.5kms approx from the exchange. No ADSL 2+ cabinet for me, and now I see more VDSL cabinets popping up around my area but still none where I am. Does this mean Telecom will try and provide VDSL from the exchange for me?

There would be no point VDSL only offers higher connection rates at short distance ie: <500m from the exchange ideally or <1km from the exchange.

If you are 2.5km from an exchange or cabinet they would not offer you VDSL as at that distance it would be no faster than ADSL2+

Hi, your attenuation needs to be around 10dB of less to even concider VDLS2

What about 13dB? Could I improve it with a better quality modem?

Hi, the attenuation is measured as the line loss at a 1MHz reference pilot, it works out roughly 13.8dB/km of 0.4mm cable, so no a better modem cannot help with the line attenuation (or loss) moving closer can. Your 13dB would indicate just on 1km and I would say would have marginal advantage in moving to VDSL2 over ADSL2+.

Also to be checked is if any of measured line loss is not the line itself but rather imposed by attenuating effects of your house wiring, in particular an unfilted pots device or too many inline filters and pots device across the line.

When you move to VDSL2 the increase in spectrum used means the effects of line stubs in your house wiring makes it pretty mandatory that a central filter is installed and a dedicated run direct to the modem, or if you are taking a naked option then ensuring that there is a clean unstubbed run direct to the modem from the demarc is important.

Thanks, my house wiring is good, I have no filters installed as I only have one cable connected from my demarc which is my modem (i use voip adapter + cordless phones).

So what your saying is that I shouldn't be dreaming every night that VDSL2 will bring me any great benefit at my current location?

Hi, Telecom have been trailing bonded VDSL2, which will mean you can achieve pretty near the 40down /15up VDSL2 speeds out to around the 1-1.2km range, I understand the ISAM supports it not too sure what CPE do at this point. Bonding requires two lines and is actively being concidered by Telecom, so keep the dream :)

You may have to excuse my ignorance here but does that mean that even though the wholesale map may indicate that if you will soon be (or already are) in a VSDSL cabinet area that you may not be able to get VDSL but it will depend on the distance to the cabinet? Or does the actual cabinet need to be within a km of the exchange?
How then are Chorus deciding where to put cabinets? The streets surrounding me (literally) are having ADSL/VDSL cabinets installed? My street is no less populated then those surrounding me. Would they be using some sort of property valuation system, assuming that more expensive properties would be more likely to buy more expensive services? The map is quite a werid shape, there appears to be areas closer to me that are cabinetised.
