I used to get 17000-18000 sync speeds on orcon+, and rightfully so, since I'm not far from my exchange.

However, being back on Orcon (moved from Telecom), my sync speeds are at best 12500.

I remember being told I was on what Telecom called a 'saturated' profile. Am I able to be put on that again with Orcon?
Am I even using the right terms?

Also, is interleaving on or off by default?

What does the admin ui for your modem show for lines stats (SNR, NM etc)?

Telecom wholesale use conservative 12dB noise margin, Orcon on their own gear in the exchanges use a more aggressive 6dB noise margin. Telstraclear are using 9db.

So yes you should expect a higher sync speed on Orcon+ vs Telecom wholesale gear. However 17000 vs 12500 is quite a big difference, so it might be something else at work like and old leftover profile or something.

Interleaving off will probably depend on how Orcon requested the line be provisioned.

What does a tracert to orcon.net.nz show?
eg: Start > Run > cmd > tracert orcon.net.nz

First hop should be less than 30ms usually with interleaving off.

Also most modems will list the adsl mode in the admin ui as FAST or INTERLEAVED.

these are my stats from the modem I am using at the moment. I have tried two different modems, and different ports in the house, and still achieve very close (+- 200kbps) sync speeds.

When I moved over to Telecom from Orcon+ originally, I went from 17500 to 11000-12000. Since then, never seen anything over 13000.

I don't think consumer grade modems are that accurate at measuring line attenuation and noise margin.

The Telecom wholesale default will definitely be 12 dB noise margin and Orcon 6dB.

Whether 6dB noise margin difference should result in a ~5Mbit sync speed difference, not sure. Kind of surprising gap imo!

Could you please explain the differences in profiles? What is a default profile and why would it differ from his previous profile? How would that effect the line speed?

I'm not overly impressed with my ADSL speeds with Orcon either. I'm only seeing a attainable rate of 9.5M and a real speed just over 8M as shown below.

Do you have a master filter installed or do you use plugin filters for all the other phone line devices in the house?

Have you tried an isolation test?

eg: Basically unplug all other phone devices from all other sockets and just have the modem plugged to jack closest to where the line comes into the house.

Hi Steve, 39dB attenuation indicates around 2.9km of cable, acknowledging that the cable may run all over the neighbourhood rather than a direct line down the major streets to your place would 2.5-3km seem right?, if so then 9Mb/s aint to bad in my books, if not then you may have something undesired loading the line, like an unfiltered phone/fax or alarm system.

I assume you have checked if you are in a cabinet or to be cabineted area on the Telecom wholesale site.

We have a master filter and the ADSL modem is plugged directly into the ADSL output from that filter.

My area isn't on the new Telecom cabinets yet so I'm on the Orcon+ network. About 2.5 Km to the exchange is probably right.

Hi, sounds like things wont improve till a cabinet arrives, around 2.5km is where ADSL1 and 2+ meet speed wise.

Hi all.

Hadn't heard from Sounddude for a few days, My guess is he got busy :), so decided to ring Orcon myself and see if I could turn over a couple of stones. Got the issue sorted and now I'm syncing at around 17500 again. Just downloaded a file and.. WOOOOO :P

Turns out they had to turn interleaving off.

a. my family moved out, so they were moving away from Telecom BigTime anyway (timed very well as far as I'm concerned). So I had to find a provider.
b. Orcon have quite good speeds in my experience.
and c. No contracts. I'm in a location at the moment where my stay is temporary till the house sells (could be next month, could be 6 months), so I need the flexibility of being able to say "well I'm moving, cancel my Internet" and not have any extra fees.
