Maybe the government needs to install some taller towers and lease the space to providers

All that needs to happen in my view (likely to be completely wrong btw) is to provide resource consent to the Providers (VF, TNZ, 2D etc) to install a larger tower with room to house an alternative carrier or two's equipment.

Not sure if the local council can make it a condition of resource consent that there must be room for alternative carriers and to allow carriers to install their equipment on first come basis. Surely better than having two towers side by side for different companies?

You can never please everyone however.

mckenndk: I would of thought places like Palmerston North with all the students would help pay for itself and maybe Dunedin.
Especially with the cheaper smartphones available now.

The palmy council has banned any new towers... For the time being.

Hi SteveON, where did you hear this? I struggle to see how they can do this?

Councils  can do anything as they are a law into themselves..

Time to get some rates payers together to remind them who they work for when they do dumb crap like this.

Well no they can't without publicising it fairly extensively which is why I asked if he had heard anything specific. The sort of thing he is talking about would require some serious changes which there isn't any evidence of on their website at least!

....(edit)....
The Tauranga City Council and neighbours are opposing an application by Two Degrees Mobile Ltd to build a cell phone tower on land at Maungatapu beside an existing Vodafone cell phone tower.
The opposition is based almost entirely on the visual impact the second tower will have and its perceived "adverse character and visual amenity effects".
The proposed site is on residential zoned land at 1 Taipari Street, a narrow tongue of land between State Highway 29 and Taipari Street on the corner by the Maungatapu overbridge. High voltage power lines pass over the site.

LMAO....
Soo what they're saying is two towers and a set of powerlines will have an 'adverse visual effect',  but 1 Tower with powerlines is quite acceptably picturesque.

Well at least the Power companies will be happy..... It should make them getting resource consent a lot easier.  (As long as the throw the odd cell tower in along the route!)
