Does anyone know when 2Degrees will be extending their broadband coverage further up than Okura?
Because I have a 1gb data pack on my phone but I cant use it at home even though I am on a 3g connection cause their network coverage for broadband stops at Okura. (Or there abouts)

They don't have anything official on the cards. Logic would dictate that they will roll out a nationwide network though.

when I got my 3g capable phone I was so rapped that I was getting a 3g signal from 2 Degrees' own network loaded a pack and then found I could not connect, rang the helpdesk and found yes was getting the right network but the 3g coverage ends down near okura. So back to 50mb packs

I hope they sort out their urban coverage before grand plans of nationwide. Lots of auckland still roams out onto vodafone - whangaparoa etc.

Personally I think it would make more sense to start getting coverage into the other major cities like Hamilton, Palmerston North and Dunedin before working on the outskirts of the three main centers.

Looks like they are having dramas with the not in my backyard brigade in Tauranga.

http://www.banthetower.co.nz/blogs/index.php?itemid=336

The Tauranga City Council and neighbours are opposing an application by Two Degrees Mobile Ltd to build a cell phone tower on land at Maungatapu beside an existing Vodafone cell phone tower.

The opposition is based almost entirely on the visual impact the second tower will have and its perceived "adverse character and visual amenity effects".

The proposed site is on residential zoned land at 1 Taipari Street, a narrow tongue of land between State Highway 29 and Taipari Street on the corner by the Maungatapu overbridge. High voltage power lines pass over the site.

Cell towers in residential zones are a discretionary activity.

The Two Degrees Mobile application is also deemed to fall foul of the objectives and policies of the operative Tauranga District Plan and the proposed Tauranga City Plan.

The hearing was held before commissioner Dorothy Wakeling on Friday.

Environmental planner Shannan Miles says the hearing was adjourned for a week to allow Two Degrees Mobile a written right of reply to matters raised at the hearing by submitters ? and to permit the commissioner to make a site visit on Friday.

Her decision is not expected to be announced until two weeks after she has received Two Degrees' written reply.

Since we're compiling a wish list for 2D, I'd like to ask for coverage on Waiheke! Come on, its technically part of Auckland central!

I would of thought places like Palmerston North with all the students would help pay for itself and maybe Dunedin.
Especially with the cheaper smartphones available now.

I am only speculating but if you have the 3g signal maybe it’s a tower that has not been livened up fully yet and it is a good sign it is on its way in your area.

The main thing that stops me going 2 Degrees is because of the lack of nation wide 3g.

Regarding the Tauranga affair they could see if they could install a new tower in a tell with Vodafone and have both sides equipment hanging off it.
The main reason the sharing rules have not come into pay from what I can see is that current towers are too short for multiply transmitters on them.

Guess the local residents of this part of Tauranga don't want the competition and want to pay higher mobile rates.

Then all the NIMBYs there will protest about a new cell site like they did a couple of years ago..

Awesome the carriers pay big $$$ for the freq to operate a mobile network and then a council does that

The government should step in here and tell the council to get their heads out of the clouds and stop smoking the whacky backy with the green party
