unlocker: All dates are 2010, number was moved on 4th Nov 2010 and it was expired at 9.05pm on 5th November, 2degrees expired it coz the 2degrees SIM I used was not topped up for a year but was supposed to expired 4th November midnight as per the text sent to me by 2degrees.

Reading this you failed to topup on time to keep the prepay account active

Or have I read it wrong?

Wait a minute? You had an ENTIRE year to top up and your complaining about 3-4 hours? The porting process can take a day if there is a delay, I have heard of it taking a week

What I don't get is why its 2degrees fault when you had all the time in the world. If you needed this number so badly and you use it for work; I only have bad things to say so I'll stop here...

I understand I had a year to top up but I wasn?t using that 2degrees number so did not top up and on the day I requested to move my Vodafone no, on 4th Nov 2010 2degrees told me that I should be fine as long as I top up within few days and 2degrees sent me a text in the afternoon on 5th that it will expire if I don?t top up by tomorrow(6th), it?s just my bad luck that the number was made inactive just 10 minutes before I tried topping up.
Now, 2degrees say they can?t d anything and Vodafone says 2degrees can only do what needs to be done. So, if we stop playing the blame game, how can I get my number back?

Sorry, I got the dates wrong as per the reminder text 2degrees sent me on 5th saying it will expire tomorrow, I believe it should have expired at midninght on 5th, not 9.05pm. I tried to top up around 9.30 and there was no network.

My aplogies to everyone, all dates are December, everything happened in the last two days. I guess I was too disturbed, so made the mistake of writing November instead of December.

It still doesn't make any sense.

1) You have a 2degrees SIM card that you weren't using
2) You had a Vodafone number on Vodafone
3) You ported the Vodafone number to 2degrees
4) A day after you ported the number to 2degrees they already expired the Vodafone number

No blame game. Just trying to understand it. Either you have not explained this situation well and there are missing information here, or 2degrees cancelled a number just a day after it was ported.

Could you please explain which is which?

As per a couple of other post, it appears a ported number will stay with the carrier for a few days after disconnection, before it moves back to original carrier.
Perhaps you should phone 2degrees, and talk nicely to see if it can be reactivated.

A - Get a New Sim, about $5 @ DSE.
B - Get in touch with their team, they can transfer the number to this sim.

Correct!
                                 1)       I had a 2degress active SIM that I wasn’t using
                                 2)      I had a Vodafone number on Vodafone
                      3)      04.12.10 – I ported the Vodafone number to 2degrees using the old 2degrees SIM
                      4)    A day after I ported, on 05.12.10 2Degrees made the SIM inactive claiming I did not top up in the last 365 days.
FYI,they gave me a $10 cfredit straight after it was ported.

Which team? 2degrees say they can't do anything as number gone back to vodafone and vodafone says the same.

As I understand it the OP;
1. Had a SIM that was just about to expire (no topup in 12 months)
2. Ported the number over to the SIM
3. Didn't top up before the SIM expired, so it did

In my opinion;

1. What the OP did was dumb.  Why would you port a supposedly valuable number onto a SIM that was known to be only a matter of hours away from expiry?

2. 2degrees is not completely without fault.  Porting a number is almost certainly an intention of continuing to use their service.  Surely something like porting a number could put a hold on the expiry of the SIM for a period of time.

I thought it was this, but both sides acting in dumb ways made me almost believe this was something that shouldn't happen.

SIM cards expire, not the account on the SIM? That's strange.

That's a whole lot of work to do to cover this, and only this, situation. Something on the order of about 80 man-hours to save 1 prepay account that hadn't been topped up for a year. The reason all of this is generally so fast & painless is that we spent a lot of time and effort to automate the whole thing. There's no-one sitting around in a back office who can put on their thinking hat and make the exception in this exceptional case. Just a couple of dumb computers.

We try to be the good guys, but there are limits to what we can do. Time spent on that, after all, is time not spent on something cool that benefits everyone.

And, how was I supposed to know that the 2Degrees SIM is about to expire, not until I got the text that it will expire tomorrow, so i thught I will top it up in the night as one would assume it won't expire until atleast midnight!

Well, I don't have the records in front of me, of course, but OP will have been sent a message warning about credit expiry the day before that, one on the day to say it had expired, and then 30 days later a warning that the account will expire, followed by one the next day to say it had expired.

Of course, if the SIM was in a drawer the whole time he may have missed the earlier warnings.
