Regs: while you might have been able to get open term contracts on XT, that wasnt the case prior from what i recall.

Correct. CDMA plans always had a minimum term (and still do to this day).

I think they're all under 12 month terms now :)

But I asked Telecom about this last week and was told that there will be no ETF charged if CDMA is shut down while you're still under contract.

I’m not even sure if it is possible for that to happen anyway. AFAIK you haven’t been able to sign a new contract for CDMA since XT launched.

XT launched May 2009 which means that the last 24 month CDMA contract should run out May 2011 plenty of time before CDMA is shut down.

where does that link state the minimum contract length?
as far as I can see those are just monthly or prepaid plans, not 12 or 24 month contracts.

ETA: ah, I see it. you have to go into each plan details.

Click on one of the plans and scroll to "things you should know" near the bottom. I confirmed with Telecom last week that you still need the contract (Mum's going to Asia soon and she can't roam on prepaid so I was investigating her options).

You could (and still can) connect to CDMA with an open term. There were some plans that required contract terms however.
