ahmad: If this plan was on Vodafone NZ they would promote it with a T-shirt printed with the words:

On Vodafone you give them $10 and "all you get" is "$400 worth of TXTs".

$19 on 2 Degrees now gets you $432.70 worth of usage on the other networks.

heavenlywild: It's getting harder and harder to say no to 2Degrees! Just wish my friends would make the shift so that they won't have to pay extra to text a 2Degrees number.

Their poor international texting agreements make it easy to say no

Have you talked to them about it? When they first started out I remember talking to them about some of these problems and they undertook to try to resolve them. Not sure how good they are at getting success though.

I asked them a while back and were told to watch the web site, and it hasn't changed since then. I'll just give my money to Vodafone until they do.

Someone on 200 actually asked for the number and name of the foreign operator. Seemed to actually care and 9c per TXT sure beats 31c.

Also if you have a smartphone check out Heywire. Free SMS worldwide that may work for you. Catches are that "free" is supported by tiny ads. And replies need to go to your (free) assigned US mobile number. That won't cost your overseas TXTers more to send to you though. And of course you'll need data access to send/receive.

Indeed, I have to agree with jfanning and say I find Vodafone's international texting QOS to be far superior to anyone else.

Meh, international SMS is a hairy problem as detailed a while back by SaltyNZ. I can understand a new mobile operator having some teething issues and it would take some time to set up the international relationships.

FWIW e-mail is a much cheaper alternative to international SMS and much more reliable. In fact I would say writing and sending e-mail over mobile data would probably work out cheaper than international SMS.

It is a very small apple to ruin the pie.

International txt is the least important factor in my opinion.
Especially when there are alternatives such as emails, voip, and apps such as skype, viber, whatsapp, google talk etc.

I use sipclient & voip solutions to contact overseas relatives, and txt is not one of my concerns.
And the overseas calling rate is like 3c per minute using voip, so why txt?

plus, how many international txt do you send in total each month??? A few???
And what proportion of money did you spend on national & local txt and call???
The difference for me is 1% vs 99%.
And I will choose a telco to satisfy my 99% needs, rather than caring about the 100%, and all the least important factors which I never use.
Nothing is 100% perfect.
So 2degrees is my choice after using Vodafone for 8 years.

International SMS is probably the least satisfying experience I have had with 2D as I encountered over Christmas when I was in the US. I could never send SMS from my 2D SIM card, not receive any from anybody apart from NZ users.

Calling wasn't such an issue since inbound calls seemed to work (well from NZ anyway) and I neve had the occasion to make any calls from the 2S SIM since I was using another phone with a local SIM card.
