This makes me rage a little inside. They haven't even got any evidence that the cellular broadcast towers will hurt them and they still fight against them with all their energy.

Seriously, choose your battles wisely. I would be so embarrassed to see a comment by myself in the paper regarding how I 'feel' that a cellular broadcast tower could be hurting me.

It sounds like 2degrees have done their research and chosen locations away from residential areas as much as possible.

Cellular towers won't help anyones health, and there's still a chance they might hurt your health, so not wanting them near your house transmitting 24/7 is a reasonable position.

Look at it this way: stand next to a power transmitter and the least that will happen is you'll heat up. Being exposed to a low level of this may or may not do anything. We just don't know for sure yet.

If you are a home owner you'd absolutely want to fight tooth and nail to not have the tower near your place because it will in practice/reality affect the value of your house.

The above is true regardless of any scientific evidence that cell towers are harmless.

But what we do know for sure is that, if there is an effect, it's so small no-one is able to find it.

Maybe a cell site will increase your lifetime risk of contracting cancer from 15% to 15.0000001%. Or maybe it will decrease it, since you hold the handset right up to your head, and it blasts out full power to compensate for being a long way from the tower. 30W@20m is something like 8mW.* 1W in contact with your head is over 13x more power.

Worry about driving your car (394 confirmed fatalities) or swimming (86). The statistics on death by those causes are verifiably much higher than having a brain explosion because there's a cell site down the street.

*30/20^2 - feel free to correct me on the detail [not an EM person] but the basic idea is sound. :)

Microwave and cell transmitter are both radio frequency transmission devices. The main variable is distance, which is what the residents are upset about. Put it 100m from them and I doubt anyone will much care.

Yes i'm playing devils advocate a little here.

Honestly how many people would be happy to have a cell tower outside their house? I'd fight it too, partly for resale value, partly for unknown (though probably very limited) health effects.

A mircowave oven does a 1000w average on average a cell site does 20 - 40w on a lower freq

resale value? i read somewhere that people who fight for not wanting massive wind turbine behind their backyard (i think it is somewhere in canada?). they figured out that this was not true after few years. they still hold their resale value. we talking here about massive wind turbine that can produce noise or vibration at a distance

Absolutely bang on. Cellphones might well double my risk of getting some rare form of cancer, but if the chances of me getting that cancer are only 1/1000000, then frankly I couldn’t care less about that doubling. I’m still incredibly unlikely to ever get it.

Given how crap vodafone voerage/signal is sometimes, you'd think it would drive your property value UP.
