I have found 2 problems which contribute my slow orcon connection occasionally:

1. Supplied Orcon Netgear router is crap needs a restart and speeds go fine again
2. Orcon's DNS servers are crap, using another 3 instead: Old Xtra, Google, and another NZ one.

Used DNS benchmark tool I think that Freitasm posted a while back.

I am thinking about my sending modem back and buying a draytek adsl2 Vigor2710Vn.

Orcon admitted to me that they had an issue in respect of international latency and they were addressing it. When I asked where this was reported they said "nowhere".

They only added that when I pointed out that they have all sorts of issues but only very few make it to their network status page.

Yeah, I've found our US-based DNS refreshes ages before Orcon's DNS.

They know - I highlighted this issue last year - and agree that it's broken.

I've just concluded that they don't care - win majority, lose minority.

Such is the world of ISPs and customer churn - nothing personal!

This shouldn't be the case as we have alot of spare international bandwidth. We will look into it.

BTW, If you don't use Orcons DNS servers, you won't get access to Orcons Akamai and Youtube caches. You will be served from overseas.

We also installed 2 new DNS servers last week.

121.98.0.1 and 121.98.0.2

Would be interested in feedback on its performance.

(apart from load, and even then you might have a bunch of balancing going on).

These are caching only resolvers, they are the addresses we are handing out from now on to people as they connect to our network.

I am not sure what you comment about balancing is aimed at, load balancing DNS requests across a pool of servers is very common.

If there are any specific questions people have then feel free to ask them, if I cant answer them I will simply say so.

I am currently on the new DNS 121.98.0.1/121.98.0.2 it was a shocker... perhaps. need to go back on the old one...

what were they ? I would prefer using the old ones.

I have been playing wow taiwan with orcon for years, it was good and stable, from last week, about 7pm everyday, the bad latency makes the game unplayable.

I am on telecom wholesale network, local connection is good which is 20k up and 9k down, i am the only 1 on the line, quite sure theres nothing wrong around my house.

I tried to ping the server i play on, it feeds back a good latency, which is much different from the number in the game, I think it may be the bandwidth is not big enough.

Could orcon please investgate and fix it asap? thanks

From a DNS perspective?
Anywhere from 180ms -210 ms for a non cached query to the mocoloco authoritative servers, which is about right.
A cached query from a DSL line at the moment is about 16ms depending on line, location, how busy the client machine is etc.

Any chance orcon have access to telecom's new cabinet soon? I was on LLU but now on wholesale, and since then experiencing peak time traffic jam.. not ideal..

smooth access to ustream would satisfy me...
