The international speed/latency issues appear to be something related to one of NZ's major upstream providers, as it affected several ISPs, including Orcon and Telecom.
As for the LLU vs non-LLU thing, of course Orcon makes more money if you're on an LLU plan. The LLU gear in the exchange belongs to Orcon. If you're on LLU, Orcon make the majority of the profit. If you're on a non-LLU plan, then Telecom make a bit of the profit. If you're currently on an LLU plan (ie @Home Gold+, for example) and your speeds all of a sudden drop through the floor, chances are the cabinet has restricted your speeds. If you ask Orcon to move you onto the cabinet on one of the non-plus plans, you will go through the Telecom network rather than the Orcon network. But your speeds will almost definitely increase ... most likely to around 20M
yes, i m with the orcon+ plan, and got a average 7300kps/800kps connection speed(the one shows in my modem)
if they move me to the cabinet, will i get a better speed?
what i hear is that orcon will try the best to keep you on their LLU, because they are making more profit on their LLU.
BTW, i just had a look on those orcon non+ plan, it's much expensive than + plan. is that any way i can get a better speed and keep my isp bill as low as possibe?
The non marketing translation is you will very likely have performance and disconnection issues due to "mid span injection" this where all your neighbours on other ISP's will be terminating on gear in the cabinet and their signals in the line bundle will be much stronger than yours and cause interference with your signal (which is coming all the way from the exchange).
Yes you will get a higher line rate in your modem if you are terminated on the cabinet, this should translate to higher real world performance on most ISP's.
I believe Orcon used to offer to keep you on the same pricing as Orcon+ when you had to move off of + because of cabinetisation. You may want to check if they still offer this?
It's basically $10 more for non + than their + plans, I wouldn't say that's much more expensive.

except the "international slow down issues" (Resolved), there are no major impact from the cabinet yet, maybe the cabinet is not activate yet.
Anyway, i will keep eye on my adsl speed until the impact, should be within a few weeks.
Note: The first test above took a total of from 2011-04-21 21:59:07 to 2011-04-21 22:02:56 to download a 13124 byte index file due to the HTTP request timeouts.
whats going on orcon :) I just changed from silver plan to bronze plan and I am now getting 130gb month and paying 10 dollars less, and oh yeh 50mins of free mobile calling. mmm
