Since the system partition has been updated, I see b136 in the phone settings, and I'm obviously not given the option to run the update again. Is there anything that I can reasonably do to fix this other than fully reinstall using the image from huaweidevice.com?

@cmcandy, any progress on your issue? I've made the same edits to local.prop, haven't yet updated OTA tho..

I've just upgraded via the handset and it was pretty damn painless. Wifi hotspot option is there, though you can't use it to share a wifi connection which is a bit of a shame, only your mobile data.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

The OTA upgrade will fail to completely apply if you have made any changes. At least the bootloader won't be upgraded, possibly other things, which will leave wifi non-functional. If you successfully restore it to its original state, the update should apply, but don't forget anything, as there's no going back or trying again.

I resolved my broken wifi situation by installing the full U8800 V100R001C00B136CUSTC183D001 image from huaweidevice.com, linked at wiki.modaco.com/index.php/Huawei_Firmware_U8800. This did a complete reinstall (user data lost) but brought it back to working state, and with the benefits of the new firmware (wifi popup gone, runs much faster, battery now lasts more than 14 hours). Ensure you pick the correct carrier customisation, or you run the risk of losing carrier add-ons like the Swype input method.

I'm trying to load the firmware you mentioned, but get an error about signature unverified.
Googling hasn't fix it either :-) I'm guessing you were able to load this because of your bootloader?

I had the same issues, ran the update it almost completed, gave me the message it was aborting, rebooted and then told me it was runnign B136 all good except for loss of wifi and running hot, i downloaded a B136 bootloader from XDA, booted phone into recovery or whatever it is wiht purple screen, swapped the image file wih the new B136 and all is working 100%, cool temp etc, painless and no loss of data/reinstall needed

I wasn't using any custom bootloader - the only changes I'd made before failing to fully apply the OTA update were to the .prop files.

I installed the Huawei update following the instructions in the PDF, placing UPDATE.APP and UPDATE_CUST.APP in a new directory /dload on the microsd card, then rebooting with volume-up+volume-down held down.
This displayed an update screen with a Huawei logo and a progress bar - different to the standard Android update screen with the green android and yellow text.

The SHA1 hashes of the update files I downloaded were:
SHA1(UPDATE.APP)= 213a71fea0160b65e36cd58c96deafbaadab4825
SHA1(UPDATE_CUST.APP)= b66a57502e27852080945208dbb13f19eb26e978

Yeah, my update won't actually start because of the edited local.props file.

Right, I can see I'm doing things differently to Wade and cmcandy. I'm getting the B136 file from http://wiki.modaco.com/index.php/Huawei_Firmware_U8800 and applying it by sticking it on the sdcard, and booting to the recovery option.

Everything I read says this should just work unless the file is named incorrectly (update.zip.zip) so dunno what to do next. I did read something about formatting the sdcard fresh so the update.zip file is first on the card, I'll do that asap once I've backed up the data on it.

Also, I'm using a download accelerator so I've disabled the multi-stream download in case it's screwing the file somehow.

I'll post updates, I'm sure I'm not the only goon who will have these problems.

Ah, that's the disconnect. The Huawei firmware update (which you get from modaco.com) is not a standard Android update.zip, it works at a much lower level, using a device/manufacturer specific update method. The two files you need on the SD card are: dload/UPDATE.APP and dload/UPDATE_CUST.app - these are inside the U8800xxxx.zip you presumably downloaded, along with a PDF file with instructions on applying the update.

It's important to boot into the Huawei recovery mode (what is normally "violet screen" mode) by holding both volume buttons on boot, rather than the standard Android bootloader menu, which is accessed by holding the volume up button only.

For anyone else, check the modaco.com site for instructions on installing a custom recovery image, you'll need that if you want to use the update.zip method rather than the sdcard:/dload/ method.

I'm running the non-2Degrees version of the U8800V100R001C00B136 directly from the Huawei device site (got tired of waiting for 2Degrees to release it), and found that I couldn't just copy and paste the swype APK file (backed up from before upgrading to the B136 update) to get swype back up and running. So I opted for the Swype beta from the swype website instead.

It's working just fine, and I suspect it is a newer version compared to what came on the phone when I first bought it, however I'm keen to find out exactly what version comes on the new B136 update that 2Degrees have just release OTA.

The version I am running from the Swype beta is 1.0.0.983.

Can anyone give me the swype version number that came with this recent 2Degrees (B136) update?

Maybe it is worth going back to the official 2Degrees release just to get the later version of swype.
