Sounddude: The server we purchased was above spec too, so we will be able to host all of the content, rather than just the popular games which most other servers do.

Awesome. I download like 10-15 gigs a month from Steam so this effectively is a massive increase on my data cap.  Cheers Orcon.

It seems that Telstraclear are offering a steam server soon as well. However in their 'important info' link on the right, down the bottom it says this:

"In order to provide better value to our customers as well as a superior broadband experience we have chosen to provide a local server as part of our network and provide this traffic as part of the TelstraClear unmetered service. However, after much discussion with Valve Software, it has been concluded that running a Steam Content Server is no guarantee that TelstraClear customers will get unmetered traffic via the TelstraClear Steam Content Server. While TelstraClear have aimed to mirror all of the available Steam content, due to the extensive games catalogue Steam offers which is regularly being added to, neither TelstraClear or Valve can guarantee that any content downloaded through the Steam client will be sourced from the unmetered Steam Content Server. We do expect the majority of users content to come from our server none the less."

So hopefully the Orcon solution will be able to guarantee unmetered downloading from Steam (assuming we point to the Orcon server - which hopefully is easy to do), unlike the TC solution.

I think if TCL could guarantee it they would, so the more likely outcome is actualy the opposite of what you state

i.e. that Orcon cannot guarantee the content will be unmetered, but they just haven't been as clear about it so far (not that that is bad, just that because they haven't officially launched it yet, they don't need to provide the details at this point)

I was figuring that Sounddude's earlier comment that Orcon bought an above-spec server whereas most others only host some games might be the basis for TC's disclaimer - i.e. maybe TCL have purchased a lower spec server than Orcon?

As you say though, once Orcon finally put the solution live we'll know these details.

I'm still excited!

The way Steam works is load sharing... nobody can guarantee anything.
Steam can change your settings. I was getting good speed from a US server and then all of a sudden, crappy speeds... I looked at my prefs and it had been changed to an Aussie server even though I manually selected the US server.

The download region in the Steam client is only a guide and does get updated automatically. Steam tries to find content servers close (presumably by geo-location of ip address) to you. Often it will use more than one content mirror for downloading.

If you want to try and force Steam to use a particular content server you can try SteamWatch or Frey's Steam Filter

Thanks for that! Up till now I've been killing off slowest server with tcpview till I get one that's reasonably quick.

I can guarantee you this is not the case for TCL , The reason for the disclamer as other people have pointed out is because things can change by themself..

Any update on the ETA of Ozoned Steam available (fortunately I saw this item before commencing some large Steam downloads so I've had them on hold waiting for this exciting development to go live)?

Cheers

So if the download region in Steam is set to NZ, can I assume that I am downloading from the Orcon server or is there another server I need to add?

Cheers

No you can not assume that, Steam will pick close servers and use more than one server for content downloads.

You can try SteamWatch or Frey's Steam Filter to prevent this, I linked them earlier.

Probably the only reason i'm staying with Orcon, as i have 5 PC's with over 200 games on steam. Updates where a real pain, mainly because i was 2 lazy to proxy the traffic.
