pwner: HSUPA allows for faster upload and better ping times etc, the upstream provider has very little to do with these speedtest results as the Auckland servers are all carried over APE (Internet Exchange). The improvements are in the Mobile Network.

so whats the network capable of?

So... Really you're only ever going to be able to go up to HSPA, since I assume the 4Mhz carrier is for 2G along with the 1800 ones, the larger 5.8Mhz carrier would be for 3G, and the 2100 carrier is for 3G infill which is great if you're outside, and not so good if you're in a building.

You could run HSPA+ in the 2100, but I don't think unless someone else finds some free airspace you could go down the dual carriers path or anything like that. It would be interesting to know how you're slicing and dicing it.

That being said I always had great speeds when I was on 2D. Blow through your monthly data cap in 1 hour rather than the usual 2 :)

there are three factors that control what the maximum theoretical throughput a site can support
1. Spectrum, generally 3G (UMTS) is 5Mhz per carrier
2. Modulation, basically how much information can you pack into that spectrum
3. Equipment, just like your PC the NodeB (3G cell site) must be able to process all the traffic and other raido signalling (there is a truck load)

HSPA+ up to 21Mbps can be done on a single carrier (5Mhz) using 64QAM, so there is no restriction of frequency there.
HSPA+ up to 42Mbps needs MIMO or Dual Carrier (10Mhz) using 64QAM, so in that case you need to have enough spectrum.

At the same time the largest controlling factors are radio signal quality because the higher modulations only work with good signal, and backhaul capacity because in the old days getting enough backhaul to carry 42Mbps of user traffic and GSM overheads was pretty hard, this is getting easier these days with Packet Microwave and Fibre to sites.
