Are those of you experiencing issues all using Snap's own DNS servers? You're not using things like Google DNS or Open DNS which will probably make things slow?

Using Snap DNS, don't have an IPv6 capable router and youtube is slow as anything 90% of the time, it seems to have issues with consistent download speeds, as I get bursts of full line speed after it buffers, but then slows down to 60-0KBps after a few seconds.

im using IPv6 and the add on and it never buffers except on full HD, but only now and again but i have 3 connections using it during holidays so i expect a certain slowdown

Common sense is not as common as you think.

RedJalapeno: Youtube has been nothing but trouble for me since I got the addon, all videos refuse to load fully, instead waiting until I catch up then buffering. Also speeds are incredibly poor 90% of the time, trying to watch something uncached in 720p is frustrating as hell.

Enabling/Disabling the YouTube add on plan won't have any effect on your YouTube speed. When enabled Snap's IP Accounting/Billing system will look at the flow records and zero rate any that are in the YouTube pool, this is all done a minute or so after you have actually used the data (you have more than likely already watched the video before this), its purely traffic analysis. It has no way of altering the Google Cache to end user experience.

Nebbie: Out of interest does anyone know what the Caching system Snap is using?
If its Oversi sounds like the VC servers need to be restarted.

The Google CDN's that sit at Snap's Datacentre's are owned and operated by Google.

if thats the case that the caching system is hosted within snaps network then hell its not performing that well. there should be no buffering to speak of.

certainly where is live 2 hours away from chch there should be next to none buffing time on videos if they are already cached.

I don't believe this is a problem unique to snap. I get youtube content from the Orcon cache and it sometimes behaves the same, almost like it's short on disk I/O at peak times.

From what I can tell a video isn't necessarily cached after just 1 person watches it, but only after it reaches a certain popularity, anything else is more likely to be your browser cache kicking in.

Slingshot had the same problem about 1 year ago since then we changed to Google CDN and this problem went away, However I have noticed a lot of interesting things with the Google cache how ever I cant discuss this here...

No IP6 and tried all 3 DNS services mentioned here and the problem persists. Also persisted across two different routers and two different modems

Snap's youtube performance has significantly improved over the past 2 months or so,

I can now stream a 720p clip of a video's which might not be as popular, i.e. the latest Lamborghini car review etc, topgear 10 min streams etc all fine,

Well done snap ;)

Just an fyi, those who are using ipv6, the Snap youtube cache servers don't support ipv6 yet, so content will be pulled from the Google Australia Youtube servers.

This can be worked around by adding this to firefox about:config (Unfortunately I haven't found a work around for chrome or IE yet.)

Change the setting "network.dns.ipv4OnlyDomains" to ".youtube.com" (minus the quotes)

By changing this setting I see between 25,000 and 35,000kbps when downloading videos, without it I see ~4000kbps.
