I went to Queensland last month with my 2degrees mobile - their roaming rates are very reasonable and I think I was on the Optus network most the time. I ended up buying a Telstra sim so I could get 500mb of data and a crazy amount of calling minutes but if you don't need the data 2degrees was great and the bill I received on my return certainly didn't break the bank.

Yes, it's quite a respectable rate, but text (SMS) is a bit pricey. I'm actually permanently living in Australia, but I got a 2degrees SIM because roaming with it is so much better than with my Aussie (Virgin SIM).
SteveON: Only issue was that [Vodafone's] data speed was 1/10 of 2degrees.
I'm not surprised. Google vodaFAIL. If you really want data in Australia, bend over and pay Telstra.
