I have a friend who wants to use his phone in Australia from time to time and have been asked if 2Degrees is a good choice of providers.

What's the current best way to get and make calls when in Australia?

Does 2Deg roam?

Is he better to get a .au sim on another network and just set call diversion?

What's the go with data?

I have not looked on the 2Deg web site. If you happen to know where the info is and care to post a link to the relevant page, cool.

If you have personal experience or have looked at this recently then I'm keen to hear your thoughts. If there's another thread on GZ that you've read that already has covered this then cool :) plz just post a link.

Stop been so lazy and review the roaming info and costs on the 2Degrees site. starting a thread on this subject is just stupid before doing some basic work

There site even has a search function. type in " roaming "

John, I think Don wants personal experience, so if you don't have anything constructive, please don't even bother replying.

Back on topic though... I just bought a Virgin Mobile SIM card and use that for data and SMS. As easy as that.

I roamed around Brisbane/hinterland/Goldcoast for a month with a 2 degree sim. No problem except they over charged for the casual data. 2 degrees refunded the overcharging back when I queried it.

That speculation is not correct, however I do agree with the comment.

I did not look at the web site or use Google first because I spend many many hours each week using provider web sites and Google to often find they are a waste of my time.

Personally, I find public forums such as www.geekzone.co.nz and www.whirlpool.net.au far more effective tools than Google and company web sites. The responses so far to this thread has proven just that point.

However, I will say that John caused me to pause for a moment and consider that the questions my friend was asking, was him being lazy and not bothering to look himself, call the provider or make any effort past asking me (as it is now the third time he's asked me).

I don't care. I'm not going to .au. I make no profit from knowing, and John is right, my friend is being lazy. (Though at almost 70, I suspect my friend is simply tired of battling with provider web sites and call centers to attempt to get information that should be straight forward.)

You were correct in your earlier speculation that I wanted some person experience feed back.

The suggestion that 2Degrees will not bill the data correctly was interesting and I could see that resulting in my friend not being happy with me if I suggest 2Deg and then this happens. So I won't make that suggestion.

I doubt that I would find a comment on the 2Deg web site that says he should check the bill with care when it comes in.

Readers would be correct in thinking the reason I posted on GZ was to get this sort of useful feedback.

Having consider the three useful responses I got (including Johns), I will do the follow:

1. Suggest my friend take the time to Google and read the 2Deg web site. John did highlight the point that my friend had made no effort either, a point that I hadn't actually thought about. It did occur to me that I wasn't asked any qualified questions this morning and I should have just said "no idea sorry, try Google".

2. Get a Telstra Australia SIM, and phone number and even phone when he gets to .au. I suspect that Telstra NextG will be the most expensive, but I do know that it works well due to it's price point causing less network saturation and I do want to avoid feed back like www.vodafail.com. I also have good contacts within Telstra Australia to get great service when I need it, so I guess pointing my friends in their direction would be the only right thing to do.

3. Suggest he use call diversion from his Telecom New Zealand service (even though he is very unhappy with Telecom) to the Telstra Australia mobile number for any incoming calls or just put a simple voice mail message on his Telecom mobile with his Australian number.

In making these suggestions, I aim that my friend won't get stung with an unexpected bill and he will be assured of having a phone in Australia that works well for him, while also limiting the number of unrequired calls he gets while in Australia as New Zealand callers will think twice about their need to contact him while he is there.

Comments on this direction are welcome :) Thanks to those who ventured feed back.

Personally in OZ I also use a Virgin Mobile SIM rather than paying roaming rates.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

I'm roaming in Aus right now. Your calls cost the same as in NZ - 44c/min - to NZ or Aus, and data costs either 50c/min or 95c/min depending on your plan. If it's a short trip there's really no need to muck around with local SIMs.

Even roaming on my casual prepay 2 degree phone, receiving and replying to emails only cost 2-3 cents each time. There are plenty of free WiFi networks in Malls and shops to do anything requiring more data.

Roaming data costs cause the most angst when the bill comes in, perhaps because often they follow on bills long after you've returned. Telco's can be sympathetic with your bill shock but the best way to avoid it is to either not use data when roaming, or get a local sim.

ALL of our subscribers are realtime controlled. You will never get a months-late shock fom us. Also, we give you the option of spend control, which is also realtime, to protect you fom bill shocks. It will be available to multiconnect accounts as well as single connections early next year. Just set it, and then stop worrying. :-)

I was in oz for 2 weeks recently and ended up with a vodafone sim. For Au$30 I could call and text home more than I could for $30 on account with 2degrees at home. They even gave me 500 mb per topup. Only issue was that data speed was 1/10 of 2degrees.
