Snackos: After wondering why Orcon never sent me my Genius router for my house move, I contacted them only to find out I'm a "Port Waiter". Nice of them to be pro-active and tell me this....

So would changing ISP remedy this or am I stuffed? So much for the bright new future.

Welcome to Port Wait Hell. I'm just a bit further out than you, in Swanson, and been waiting for over a year now - I believe there is only 25 people in front of me now.

Your options are mainy only wireless - either satelite, or maybe wireless if you have line of sight to the sky tower or Waiatarua tower which I did.

Another option is to get friendly with a neighbor and run a long ethernet cable between houses.

i have an interesting experience two years ago. i decided to go with maxnet (was on telstraclear cable) at my new address. 1 week after that, maxnet called and said there was no port available in my area. i rang them few days later and asked for them to check again. they promised to contact ?chorus and will ring me back the following day. they called me the following day, and was told that ETA for ports could be available between 6-12 months.

on the same day, i went to telecom shop. i told them i want to open a new broadband account. the guy did some 'check' with his laptop and confirmed that they can get me connected within few days. sure enough, chorus got me connected within 3 days.

Cheers. I will try that if Orcon cannot get me that port.

Ah, then that makes it easy. You need to talk nice to the tenants, and make sure they don't cancel their account. Then churn their connection.
I not sure how Orcon handle this, but I can help if you choose to move to WorldxChange.

ok guys, heres what a cousin of mine did. he is halfway up scenic drive near swanson and was put on a waiting list of more than a year, however because he can see half of Auckland from his house, he has linked up to someone else down in Ranui using two high gain 24dbi grid antennas (one at either end) and two high power wifi routers with some low loss LMR400 coax, its line of sight over about 5 to 8 km and seems to be quite solid, although the snr does drop a little in the rain. He's getting average download speeds of around 200 to 300kb/s, and whats more he is splitting the broadband bill with owners of the house in Ranui who he's picking it up from.

Good on him, the gear for this kind of example gets cheaper and cheaper every day, there is very little reason not to.

If you needed a temp solution while waiting for DSL you could look at Wireless. We (Compass) have a couple licensed wireless POP sites in the area so that might be a option (if you have line of sight).

Hi Skyplonk, I have LOS to both Waiatarua and Sky Tower ... are either of these any good, or where else in the area might be a possibility for me? I'm also up high at the Swanson end of Scenic Drive.

Hi Virgil,

We have wireless gear in the Sky Tower and at the water reservoir at the Waikumete Cemetery. Waikumete would be your best bet if you could see it. Sky Tower should be ok, but we would need to do a signal test to see.

I am back at work tomorrow and get get someone to give you a bell if you want any more info.

That was quite a common thing back then, and I seem to recall your incident as you posted about it on GZ I believe, although that could quite as easily have been someone else too. We used to raise those to our account managers but little was ever done about it and no real explanation provided.

As far as I'm aware when you cancel your DSL service they don't disconnect the port for at least 28 days. ie they keep in 'in tact' as they call it. During that time I don't see why anyone else should be able to get your port, a little like the grace period when domain names expire.

hmmm, so thats why when i plugged a modem into the phone line at my sisters new place they had just bought and were moving in, it got a dsl sync even though they hadnt had anything connected yet. However I didnt look at anything else, dont know if it would have authenticated or not on default user@xtrabb.co.nz, but it definately got a sync. The previous owners had moved out a couple weeks prior.

I'm guessing you are up Scenic drive a couple of kms past Waitakere road? There are a couple of RBI cabinets due to go in by middle of next year - so still an 18 month wait for you.

Predated: I was more thinking of getting the neighbour to put in a change of address request with their isp to Snackos's address then Snackos paying the bill. however it is in jest so I'm sure problems will abound :)

That wont work, If you move you'll end up as a port waiter and the last waiting user gets the port...
