After wondering why Orcon never sent me my Genius router for my house move, I contacted them only to find out I'm a "Port Waiter". Nice of them to be pro-active and tell me this....

So would changing ISP remedy this or am I stuffed? So much for the bright new future.

johnr, would it make any difference if the ISP has their own gear in the exchange/cabinet?

Well I won't have a landline so dial up is out of the question. And I looked at the mobile broadband plans and they are outrageous costs.

So I guess I'll just have no internet. In a so called developed country. In 2012. In the largest city.

You could try going around your neighbours and seeing if you can buy their connection from them :)

This wouldn't work because as soon as someone let the connection go it will go to the first waiting in line... Unless you piggyback on his connection without actually moving it.

I was more thinking of getting the neighbour to put in a change of address request with their isp to Snackos's address then Snackos paying the bill. however it is in jest so I'm sure problems will abound :)

you could go to the VF web site and see if your address is feed by theier red network. what exchange are you off do you know ??

Anything I suggest or say is my own thoughts and not provided by anyone else unless stated

oh also, port waiter is normally for the broadband part only, so if you talk to your isp they could at least get a phone line in and give you dial up, it's better than nothing and low graphic, optimized sites like Geekzone would be ok

Probably not in this case as it sounds like they are hosted off a cabinet. If they were off an exchange then Orcon may have had equipment in it and been able to provide a service.

If you ever become a port waiter you only hope is to check with:

Slingshot, Vodafone, Orcon, Telstraclear and Telecom, after that you'll be doing some good waiting.

Where exactly are you located and what exchange are you being provided service from (the Chorus website will tell you this)? The availability of ports in any cities is virtually a non event now that the cabinetisation project is essentally complete.

I'll be in Henderson (off sturges road)

I've spoken to them again and they think they can get the port that the current tenants of my house will relinquish once they move out. So here is hoping. Being the eternal pessimist, I'm sure that wont be the case.

i have an interesting experience two years ago. i decided to go with maxnet (was on telstraclear cable) at my new address. 1 week after that, maxnet called and said there was no port available in my area. i rang them few days later and asked for them to check again. they promised to contact ?chorus and will ring me back the following day. they called me the following day, and was told that ETA for ports could be available between 6-12 months.

on the same day, i went to telecom shop. i told them i want to open a new broadband account. the guy did some 'check' with his laptop and confirmed that they can get me connected within few days. sure enough, chorus got me connected within 3 days.

Welcome to Port Wait Hell. I'm just a bit further out than you, in Swanson, and been waiting for over a year now - I believe there is only 25 people in front of me now.

Your options are mainy only wireless - either satelite, or maybe wireless if you have line of sight to the sky tower or Waiatarua tower which I did.

Another option is to get friendly with a neighbor and run a long ethernet cable between houses.
