I note Vodafone In Australia retail prepay Sim Cards for $AU 1 dollar so why are we paying a lot more here.

Called competition and customer base.
One hostel I stayed at had a shelf with sim cards from most providers over here as he said the providers realized that alot of international people need a local sim and don't know what to do so they provided them to the local hostels to hand out and the all have a basic manual on how to top them up.

O and you have to top them up to be able to use them they do come with free credit.

but this is way off topic now.

Those answers from official telco representatives are not very nice, are they?

Reality is people see things being cheaper out there and ask (with reason) "why?" and in reply get condescending answers.

Well, in fairness we have both already pointed out that SIMs are NOT 5c each, in this thread and others. The reality is that they cost a lot to buy, and if some operators choose to absorb a loss on SIMs sometimes - as we did for quite some time - that that is their choice. But carrying on with that argument after it has already been pointed out smacks of being deliberately obtuse.

We are not charities, we are entitled to cover our own costs, make a profit, or a loss, as we so choose. So, to be clear, once and for all: SIMs are not free. Neither are they supposed to be throwaway items. It is not just the SIM; because we need to keep the account around for a year we also pay a lot for capacity on the network elements. Therefore, most of the time, SIMs will cost you money. If you think it's too much money, then don't throw away your SIMs.

EDIT: also, I am NOT the official telco representative. :-)

I don't agree - This is NZ, these questions are getting really silly from people who expect a little country in the middle of nowhere with a low population and low ROI for pretty much anything to be as competitive as the rest of the world. We have a different Marketplace.

Perhaps if the children stop complaining then there won't be any issues.

My last experience buying a telecom sim last year, it cost $30, but it came with $30 credit, so effectively the card was free.
Also 2d used to sell $2 and $5 sims, but now only sell $10 ones, and when I got a $2 one a few years ago, I believe it did have $2 credit on it. So what was the difference between the $2, $5 and $10 cards? I thought the $10 sim would at least come with something, say $5 and the webpage did imply free credit, but that was obviously a mistake.

You missed my point. I presumed the because the welcome page implied free credit on a new connection, that it would come with some free credit. They have now removed that text after I pointed it out to them, so it was obviously a mistake, as it was misleading to customers. But $10 just for a card, when they were $2, or $5 not that long ago, is quite a huge price increase, if they don't include some credit on it too. I think it should say if it includes credit on it or not, it doesn't mention what it actually covers.
I probably wouldn't have bothered switching from vodafone if I had known it would be quite a hassle (eg not working on my nokia 1100 phone due to the firmware on it), and effectively it cost me $10 to switch. Perhaps I will recoup that overtime.

If it said on the packet $10 credit when you brought it and that was not the case and it did not have a clause saying they could change it then you might have a case. Otherwise, tough luck.
