Lorenceo: You shouldn't have to change anything on your end for the static IP to start working - it's assigned on the ISP side.

You would think right? I would be on the phone with them and they would make the switch and suddenly the router would say "disconnected". Then they would switch it back to the CGNAT and everything would be fine. They said the same thing. It is so frustrating.

Static IP is applied on your connection as long as you have entered the correct username/password. Nothing needs to be configured on the router.

As soon as they would change it back to the CGNAT everything would start flowing again without me doing anything.

@brendawine To be perfectly honest this sounds like you're currently using a trash router combined with user error. Routers either route traffic or they don't and when they don't this indicates either an issue with the connection or a dead router. In a routers case the routing engine is also the engine doing port forwarding and firewalling meaning it is all or nothing.

Changing to a Static IP in the many, many times I've done it for people doesn't even normally involve a router reboot - it just works. If your router fails to establish a PPPoE connection this indicates you need to re-consider your router choices IMO.

The Fritz!Box is also a great router - I've actually got one at work the devs all use for the times they need a straight internet connection. At its peak during the day there is over 70 clients connected to it. Seriously, try that with your router (I know it'll struggle). Asus routers are just not that good and I know this based on Asus at first wanting to send me a router until I said I post non-bias reviews and that I do load testing to ensure it can do a gigabit connection with different packet types - after this, they refused to send me a router. Every other company has not had a problem with me putting a router under a proper stress-test during a review. When I tested Asus routers myself (often borrowing them from people) they never passed any of my tests - and yet, the router you consider "trash" passed with flying colours...

You are being very defensive of a hardware device lol. Look, I am more than willing to take some criticism in jumping the gun and changing routers. I'm sure the Fritz is fine. In fact I am sure that the $170 asus rt-ac58u is more than fine for what I need (a simple plex server and some remote services).

What you are seeing here is a 2degrees customer who is very frustrated that 2degrees made this change suddenly and did not communicate that to me leading me down a rabbit hole of troubleshooting.

I would also like to take a moment to address your "user error" comment. I am not dumb. I obviously knew enough to set the router up, setup the pppoe with my login information and set the vlan id (which is in the absolute dumbest place under voip for some reason). If you would like to expand on my user error and what I could be doing wrong that would be very much appreciated. At the end of the day I just want to sort this out.

And I promise to stop making fun of the funny looking little red router.

It's also well known to be hard to setup. That vlan box is a pain. I run out of hands for the number of technical folk at rsps and lfcs who have struggled to find it.

Oh and 2d bind your static up to your ppp auth. So if your getting that wrong could also cause issues.

Sounds like something is not setup correctly with your PPPoe auth on your router. This is essential ie. username/password to ensure you receive your static IP.

This sort of makes sense but you would think then that being in the CGNAT wouldn't work either. When the new router comes in I'll take a close look at those preconfigured settings and see if I went wrong somewhere. Just for my own sanity I guess haha.

For example, I rely on frequently remote desktop accessing a variety of computers as well as accessing a NAS and some other connected devices. What I don't understand is how to locate them? I was relying on Dynamic DNS and portforwards to do this in the IPv4 world.

Each device on IPv6 has a unique globally addressable address. So yes any IPv6 address can send a message to any other IPv6 address subject to firewall rules permitting this. There is no need for a port forward as devices are directly addressable.

If you have a static IPv6 address at the 'to' end it's all straight forward (as long as you know the address) otherwise you need some kind of dynamic DNS (e.g. myfritz) to find it.

Hi All,

We have been working with TAC over the last week and isolated the issue to a memory leak (bug) which is causing memory to be exhausted. A permanent fix will be coming in March, in the interim we are extending our work around to remove the impact while we wait on regression testing and deployment. The Team have put some steps in place to ensure more enhanced monitoring should this issue look likely to reoccur.

Yes, in Auckland seems most people are getting pushed to CGNAT now. You can request a static retroactively for free if it affected you, otherwise $10.
