lanks: Just downloaded the app on my smartphone to read my Hop card. It reads the balance and the bus rides on my card which is cool.

It also has the topup option, but it seems like you can only topup the cash balance and not the bus rides. Anyone know if there are plans to support topping up bus rides?

I believe the rides are stored as tokens so your would need to get the tokens specifically from the token issuer which is probably Wellington Transport or whatever it is called rather than Snapper.

Snapper can happily add the cash balance because that is universal.

That would also be an easy way for other people or companies add their serices to a snapper card, they could work with snapper to issue tokens to the snapper card. FLYBUYS, AIRPOINTS, AA Fuel Rewards, etc could all theoretically be added to a snapper card AFAIK.

Currently only the ticket agents can add rides to the card - even MySnapper can't do it.

Are you looking to top up for Auckland or Wellington based bus rides?

The Snapper app shown last night with the LG phone had the ability to show if any passes were loaded on the card and also buy passes as well (just like topping up) for use in Wellington.

Auckland is a bit more complicated with the Hop / Snapper situation, one which I'm sure Snapper / Auckland transport will be talking about behind the scenes I guess

Probably huge security issue for the Cardax people to worry about there, but dead convenient for me...

It's easily possible.

I know the Snapper guys use their cards for their building access system, the JCOP Snapper cards have a Mifare emulator on them.

FYI Barclay's bank were the first to deploy a Paypass enabled handset a few years ago, but clearly with so much fragmentation in the NFC market it's hard to deploy a simple solution across all handsets until Google realised their model in flawed and adopt the Open NFC API and rather than their own API.

Hit the menu button, the Buy Pass option is there.

Does anyone know how the bus terminals work? do they write to the card, or it the card deducting money? I only ask as i was wondering aloud if a credit transaction could be initiated from a bus terminal, therefore allowing online top ups.

Its just another card transaction so why not. Guess it comes down to back haul from the Bus. I've heard that the WLAN on the bus terminals only gets switched on at the depot to up load transaction data. You would think that if they had the back haul - cell or WLAN along every bus route, then it would be real time up load (and down load) connection to the back end (and thus online tops without the usb feeder thingy).

Exactly. Would solve SO many problems, that and get an app/web app out there for the lack of balance problem.

And i would have thought it would be much simpler than the path taken...

When Snapper buy me the phone, I'll use it...

I'd be keen as well for the bus transactions to be in real time (or at least when they reach the end of that run so within the hour) just with my standard snapper to be honest. Comes down to $$$ I guess

Just a couple of comments on the service.

Being able to top up a card or read its balance from most NFC phones is cool. But alas on the 5 cards I tried, I could only read one. And the cards we use at home were not readable. So I thought I might be able to save myself the trip to the supermarket or wherever to top up my son's card but that plan isn't going to work. I could ask for a new card but his card is also his school ID card and I am sure the school has a ton of old stock cards that don't work.

Out of interest I popped into the 2D store on Willis Street to buy a Snap2Pay SIM. They initially said they could not sell me one, then looked up the price and said it was free! (of course it's free with a phone). They sold me one in the end as a SIM swap so I will swap my son's phone number onto this SIM and see if the technology works on a non-certified phone. The 2D guys last night ware not sure it would work or not and to try it out!

If not then I will just wait till they release a revised app that works on more model phones and I am only out of pocket $5.
