What is Touch2Pay?

Touch2Pay is 2degrees latest technology innovation, which means customers can now use their Touch2Pay Smartphone to pay for goods and services, without the need for cash or an EFTPOS card - Our partnership with Snapper is just the beginning.

What is Snapper?

Snapper is a contactless payment system, bringing together the latest technology to allow people to pay for their transport, food and beverages with a simple swipe of their card – and now they can Touch2Pay with their mobile phone.

What does a Touch2Pay Smartphone & SIM with Snapper Mobile let you do?

Now you can now use Snapper to pay for transport, food and beverages with a simple touch of your Touch2Pay smarphone.  All Touch2Pay Smartphones come pre-loaded with a Snapper Mobile App that lets customers view their Snapper balance, top up their Snapper account and purchase a travel pass.

When does Touch2Pay with Snapper Mobile launch?

3-May-12

Where can I buy a Touch2Pay Smartphone & SIM with Snapper Mobile?

We're launching in Wellington only to kick things off. Customers can buy a Touch2Pay Mobile from any of the Wellington 2degrees Stores - Lambton Quay, Customhouse Quay, Lower Hutt, Porirua

Can I buy a Touch2Pay with Snapper Mobile phone & SIM from any store that sells 2degrees products?

No. You can only buy a Touch2Pay phone & SIM for the 2degrees stores in Wellington.

Will the Snapper SIM work in a normal phone?

No - you need our launch Touch2Pay Smartphone for it to work, but we'll be adding more handsets to the range all the time.

What if I'm already a 2degrees customer?

No problem - our staff in store can sort you out with Touch2Pay SIM to replace your existing SIM.  Just remember you'll need to buy a new Touch2Pay Smartphone

What happens with the Snapper card I already have?

You can transfer the balance from your existing Snapper card to your new Snapper Mobile account - simply call 0800 555 345 - once you do this though the card will no longer work.

You can run down the balance on your existing card and then start using your Touch2Pay with Snapper Mobile account, that way if you ever want to use your standard Snapper card again, it will still be available.

Will my Touch2Pay Smartphone with Snapper Mobile work in Auckland?

Your Touch2Pay phone will work anywhere a normal Snapper does in Wellington or Auckland - however the phones & SIMs are only available to buy from Wellington 2degreese stores.

How do I top up the Snapper balance on my Touch2Pay Smartphone?

You can use the Snapper Mobile App to top up your Snapper balance.  Or you can top it up the same as you would with a normal Snapper - anywhere you see the Snapper sign.

What happens to my Snapper balance if I lose my Touch2Pay phone & SIM?

When you get your Touch2Pay Smartphone with Snapper mobile we suggest you register your Snapper number via the Snapper App or go to www.snapper.co.nz - that way if you ever lose your phone all you need to do is call Snapper on 0800 555 345, let them know your Snapper number and they'll put a hold on your old balance.

Where do I find my Snapper number on my Touch2Pay SIM?

You can find your Snapper number on the SIM itself - just look for the Snapper logo. It's also printed on the big piece of plastic surrounding the SIM card.

Can I find out what my Snapper number is via the Snapper Mobile Application?

Simply open up the Snapper App & swipe to the left.

Will other NFC capable handsets (e.g. Parallel Imported, bought overseas) be compatible with the Touch2Pay service?

Not at the moment. For our launch phase the service will only work on Touch2Pay handsets available from 2degrees. Later in the year we expect to make small changes to the service which will make it compatible with many NFC handsets regardless of where they come from.

UPDATE: actually you can install the Snapper app from Google Play and use it on any NFC-capable Android. If you don't have the special SIM card then you will be able to read and topup Snapper cards, but you won't be able to use yur smartphone for payments at merchants and transportation.

What is the Touch2Pay with Snapper Mobile launch offer?

Customers who buy a Touch2Pay mobile and activate their SIM before July 31st 2012 will get;

• Free Weekend Bus Travel – Get FREE weekend bus travel on Wellington NZ bus services every weekend until the end of 2012

• Free Weekend Data  - Get 1GB of FREE MBB Zone Data every weekend until the end of 2012

What if I already have a travel pass for my Snapper account?

Customers who already have a travel pass for their Snapper account can take up our alternative offer of 2 weeks free bus travel instead

Where does the free Snapper pass get loaded?

In store when you purchase your Touch2Pay Mobile or SIM. If for some reason your free pass hasn't been loaded, you can call Snapper on 0800 555 345 and they’ll let you know what to do.

When does my 1GB of weekend MBB Zone data get loaded?

The weekend following the date you activate your Touch2Pay SIM.

How do I refresh my Snapper balance?

Tap anywhere in the main screen to refresh your Snapper balance and update your pass status. Your balance will be updated automatically when you top up, but you'll need to refresh it after using it on the bus, in a taxi or after buying something at a Snapper retailer.

How do I top up?

Tap the "Top Up” button on the main screen and enter your credit card details.  If there is an outstanding credit waiting to be collected you will automatically receive this as part of the process.

You can also top up your Touch2Pay Smartphone in Snapper retailers and using a Snapper kiosk. Simply place your phone on the Snapper reader just like any other Snapper.  Go to www.Snapper.co.nz for locations of Snapper retailers and kiosks.

What type of credit card can I use?

You can use Mastercard or Visa credit and debit cards that have been issued in New Zealand to top up your Snapper or purchase a travel pass.  Other types of credit card or cards that have been issued overseas cannot be used.

How do I buy a travel pass?

Select the menu and tap the "Buy a pass" button.   You can also buy a travel pass from selected Snapper retailers.  If there is an outstanding pass waiting to be collected you will automatically receive this as part of the process.

How do I find my Snapper number?

Swipe the Snapper balance area of the home screen to the left to view your 16-digit Snapper number.

The information displayed on the screen will also confirm if you have a travel concession Applied to your Snapper, and therefore what type of fare you pay.  For more information on concessions click www.Snapper.co.nz/travel-concession.  To return to the home screen, just swipe back to the right.

How do I check my passes?

Swipe the pass balance area of the home screen to the left to see a more detailed view of your travel passes.  To return to the home screen, just swipe back to the right.

How do I get the Snapper widget?

The Snapper Application includes a handy widget that you can place on your phone's home screen.  Press and hold an empty space on your phone's home screen.  Tap on the Snapper icon in the widget list and the Snapper widget will be added to your home screen.

How do I use the Snapper widget?

Tap on the Snapper fish to launch the main Snapper App.  Tap anywhere on the balance to refresh your balance.  Tap the Bal/Pass button to toggle between your balance and your pass status (it will refresh every time you toggle).

How do I read and top up another Snapper?

Simply place a next generation Snapper or Hop card to the back of your phone whenever your phone screen is active, and the Snapper Mobile App will display the balance on that card.  You can also top up a next generation card using the App, which is very useful if there are more than one Snapper or Hop cards in your house.

The next generation Snapper cards are easy to spot, as there's a + sign in the top right hand corner of the front of the card.

When you're reading another Snapper, you'll see a small "wave" symbol in the top right hand corner of your screen.

How do I register my Snapper?

Register your Snapper to protect the money on it and to view your transaction history online.  Select "Register" from the menu for information about registering your Snapper.

How do I keep my Snapper App up to date?

From your phone's Android Market, select the My Apps menu option, then tap on Snapper Mobile and tick the "Allow automatic updating" box.  This will ensure that you are alerted to any updates to the App so that you always have the latest features.

Why can I not see the full set of functions in the App?

To make full use of the Snapper Application, you must have a compatible phone and 2degrees Snapper SIM.  If your phone is not fully compatible, you may still be able to download the App to your phone, but you will only be able to use it to read and top up another Snapper.

To use your phone as a Snapper, you will need a Snapper 2degrees SIM in a compatible phone. Go to www.Snapper.co.nz or 2degreesmobile.co.nz for more information.

What if I have more questions?

If you need more help with the Snapper Mobile App, or if you have a general enquiry regarding the use of Snapper, you can email us at info@snapper.co.nz.  Alternatively check our website at www.Snapper.co.nz or call 0800 555 345.

This page show what you can do with a non-2degrees Pay2Go NFC-enabled smartphone.

First off, thanks for the invite to the event. Not been to something like that before and it was interesting.

But one this that did leap out to me during it, when they talked about the design of the mobile app, and that they already had all the back end pieces, if they can provide a mobile app with interaction with the cards (internal and external) AND their web site. Why can't a pure mobile app (or web page) be created for just getting your balance information?

There seem to be no barrier to doing this IMO. Especially now.

Because at the end of the day your Snapper-stored balance is the master balance, regardless of what the website shows.

I was lucky enough to win one of the LG phones with Snapper at last nights presentation, unusual as I don't tend to win stuff.

My wife is taking it to her large corporate office today to demo it to her colleagues who already use Snapper, but in general don't currently have Smartphones. She thinks they will be impressed by the functionality and price of the phone.

It came with $20 already loaded onto it and to test the top up function I threw some more money on it this morning so she can take her work colleagues out for a Mojo coffee to test it.

After that its my son's turn to take it to work for the same reason.

If anyone wants to give it a go (load your own cash on it sorry :) PM me and I will be happy to loan it out.

Finally, thanks 2Degrees, LG NZ, and Snapper

Remember that it can't (reliably) read older Snapper cards (more than 18 months old). Other than this it should work just fine.

Yeah but for 90% of snapper users with an internet enabled phone, the balance off the web site would be close enough, and better than trying to use their full website on a 3.5" screen.

BTW, I think I've just managed to sell the concept of the phone to a bus user already..Pity the phone isn't listed on the 2 degree site yet.

From the previous thread:

freitasm: If you have a NFC-enabled Android device you can download the Snapper app now (on any network). You won't be able to use it as a Snapper card unless you have the appropriate SIM from 2degrees, but you can read Snapper cards and topup Snapper cards - very handy since it makes it a lot easier to reload those!

From the Q & A:

I have updated the Q&A here. You can install the Snapper app in any NFC-capable mobile, and will be able to read balance, topup balances on Snapper cards, but won't be able to use the smartphone itself for payments if you don't have the special SIM card.

Well so far I have not been able to read any Snapper card with my GN.  I hear the beeping going on but nothing happens. I suspect they are older ones since they don't have the + sign at the right of the fish. But interestingly my son's Snapper card is also his school ID which he just got this year. It didn't read so perhaps the school has old stock of cards around?

I tried reading my building access card :-) and it rightly complained that the card was not a Snapper card so the app appears to be working okay.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Yeah, that doesn't, that I could see, list the phone model/price.

That's better.  Stupidly, I went looking through "phones" on the 2 degrees site.

Fried Snapper anyone!

Hey Mauricio,

Remember last night we tried to read the balance off my Snapper, unsuccessfully?

I had to walk home last night :)

The Snapper reader on the bus said, 2 devices detected from simply holding the card up by itself!

Still fried this morning. I hope it doesn't do it to all snapper happys!

I will try the snapper team to fix it.

Cheers

What a fantastic concept! I know it has been talked about for many, many years - so it is good to see it actually in place and operational.  It's just a shame I'm not in Wellington - might have to move back there!

Well done 2degrees and Snapper!

Yep, sent an email to Snapper when I saw J's comment on Twitter. You can call in anyway to get a replacement.

Interesting we were just trying to read it...
