Dude, I have travelled a lot with 2degrees, nationally and internationally and never had any issues like you say. The roaming in oz? That's your phones issue. And the google thing, its because your number is ported. Again; nz porting is crap.

Well, I have attempted to contact Google about this issue, but they do not respond. I even went to the trouble of sending them a formal letter by fax, on 2degrees letterhead, and have not received any reply. Unfortunately I have about as much control over the situation as you would over me posting this reply to you to say, reddit, instead of Geekzone. In other words, none whatsoever. I do not get to choose how Google route their messages. If I did, believe me this would not be an issue.

Where I live, in Palmerston North, I pass in and out of the zone just by driving in my neighbourhood. I don't understand why (since I only use national data) but I lose data access regularly when on the move.

Because you are - literally - switching between networks.

Almost at final straw time, I went to Australia a week after moving to 2Degrees. No service at all on arrival.

Odd; I am from Sydney myself, and the only time I've ever had trouble roaming there was over Christmas when TNZI had their massive signaling failure. The only carrier(s) that did not affect were Vodafone Aus & NZ, who have their own dedicated transtasman signaling links. I have not heard any other reports of roaming problems in Australia recently.

Back at Auckland airport, 2D SIM in place, I had no service. It took an hour before the phone registered

Also odd. I find my iphone to be quite slow reselecting a new network, which is to say I miss the days my Nokia could do it in 20 seconds. The whole 2 minutes it takes the iphone feels like forever. But an hour?

I don't recommend porting your number over.

I'm sorry to hear that your experience has been so overwhelmingly negative.

I find that SMS sent between carriers has a nasty habit of disappearing, and it seems to be a bit worse on my ported 021 number than when I was with Vodafone. For me the solution is simple - don't use SMS. It's an archaic and unreliable technology and fortunately my best friend has an iPhone which allows the use of iMessage so I just tell everyone else to contact me via phone, email or Facebook instead.

Personally I think SMS will peak in a year or two and then begin to decline. The problem then will be fragmentation of standards for SMS-like services; e.g. iMessage only works between iPhones. Luckily the 3GPP has a solution for that too. All carriers will be building it within the next 12-18 months I expect.

(Edit - I should point out that I'm not advocating any particular vendor there, they just have a nice demo video - click 'Joyn' at the bottom, which is what they service will be branded).
