Hi Paul (ptinson)

Happens on the following browsers IE9, Firefox 8.0.1 & chrome 21.0.1180.60

On my partners laptop running vista I don't see as high numbers of megabytes on the wireless but still higher than the wired connection, will do some more testing. I'm going to remove skype then reinstall see if that is the issue as that could have been running in the background at times!

Ok I did some testing last night on the skype situation. On my partners laptop it seems to using much less data than mine does (according to ShaPlus) on a 10sec call between the 2 computers hers used about 20mb mine showed 200mb+ (but surely if that was the case I would have the fastest internet in NZ!!). It's as iff this amounts are bogus?

I did also do a DSL test using http://www.nzdsl.co.nz/ using wireless connection

My laptop used according to 120+mb of bandwidth during the test
My partners laptop used 60+mb of bandwidth during the test

Crazy figures when doing them both wired under 20mb of bandwidth used!

Paul (ptinson) can I ask in what capacity are Voyager Internet Ltd connected with Orcon?

An interesting figure taken from my stats this morning:

How can my uncharged amount calculate higher than supposedly what I have used that doesn't make any sense?

Voyager is not connected to Orcon.
It was, it isnt any longer.
Only think you could say connects the two is Seeby and a few of his geeks:)

Yes it can be higher, because it is the amount of data used that is not charged for, the second to last column is only the total of the charged data.
To get total usage you add the two together:)

Does that make sense? It made sense as i wrote it:)

Hi Paul

The reason I ask about Voyager Internet Ltd late last night (after spend the whole day trying to get to the bottom of this) I used a program called wireshark it captures in real-time the packets sent through a connection giving a very detailed report. 2 x Voyager ip addresses came up in big numbers on the report but I take it these will relate to the DSL speed check I performed when capturing the packets?

There are 2 ip address that straight off the bat seem suspicious to me 110.232.178.193 & 210.247.196.29 when I do an ip address check these ip addresses seem to be both in S.A. in the middle of nowhere with no organization assigned to them. Do they look & sound dodgy to you?

The first is an edcast CDN address, the second is web hosting company in AU.

What were the two voyager addresses?

If you want me to look at the pcap, assuming you have one then let me know and we can arrange someone to see if anything is obvious.

Hi cdrpnz,

All I can say is that monitor daily what data you have used and compare it with the Orcon usage meter and see if there is a significant difference as that is what I am doing. I am still waiting on a reply from Orcon but I guess the outcome for me is that I have used that data without any hard proof that I actually have.

Hope you get yours sorted out as to me it looks like you have taken this to a whole new level with this voyager business.

Ash.

Hi Ash,

I'm hoping to do a bit more investigation tonight I'm heading over to a pals place to see if my laptop bandwidth reacts in the same way on his wireless network. One way or another I will get to the bottom of this situation! Nothing worse than being worried to use your internet connection for fear of getting slapped with a hefty bill come the end of the month!!

I'm also going to catch up with a techie from another NZ telecommunications company tonight to see what he thinks.

Will keep you all posted.

Thats my fault sorry Ash, I did promise to get that to you and its just been crazy busy with the Olympics.

I hope people realise that we have no view of what access method you use to your modem, to us its all the same.

That traffic to voyager looks like vnc/shared desktop traffic.
Do you have vnc, teamviewer or something similar installed?

www.nzdsl.co.nz is on 114.23.33.130, is that where you were doing speed tests from?

try using speedtest.orcon.net.nz as well to see if you have the same issue.

Paul

Hi Paul when I did the wireless/wifi connection pcapng test yes teamviewer was running at the time through a portable version of teamviewer I do not have teamviewer installed on my system and no teamviewer connection was open when performing the wired test which I have just given you access to.

Cheers
