Has anyone else noticed a spike in data consumption with Orcon (Genius) for 5 and 6 July?

2012-07-05 2794.96 MB (2.73 GB) Upload
1065.8 MB (1.04 GB) Download
Total 3860.77 MB

2012-07-06 1373 MB (1.34 GB)
1437.11 MB (1.4 GB)
Total 2810.11 MB (2.74 GB)

Normally we don't upload more than about 200MB and download up to 600MB (unless downloading a larger file intentionally)

We have had no programs running that might upload or share data so we are at a bit of a loss.

There has been no notification on Orcon that there have been any data issues.

Our data cap is 30GB and runs out 23 July yet we are already half way there!

Orcon says 14.58GB used whereas my Network Data monitor (DU meter) says 5.8GB (there is often a wee bit of difference - about 1.5gb per month)

6.5GB MIA!

We will ring the Orcon Contact Centre but I doubt they will be able to resolve.

No we don't have iCloud etc running - I have Samsung Galaxy 3 but it has own data allowance and Asus Transformer tablet.

We have checked around at home for anything unusual that may be causing it but not found anything and as I said our own Network Monitor is not seeing these high upload/downloads

Hi there,

You would need to check things like software updates (Windows updates, game updates, etc) and any P2P software you might have running. It would pay to check with everyone in the household what they've been using prior to calling the Helpdesk.

If not, call the Helpdesk on 0800 13 14 15 and they investigate and see exactly where the data went.

Cheers,

Cam

Its possible your connection is been ever so slightly DOS'ed however if your router will reply to pings you should see a almost equal amount of data coming in as out....

Run a recent Virus/Melware scan etc?

I agree with psychrn, although my data usage for the days psychrn has mentioned above looks all right, my current usage for the current month does not. As I have a usage meter on my pc and my brother has a usage meter on his pc, I was calculating the total we had used for this month currently and decided to compare with Orcons usage total and by surprise we were 4 GB out?. I don't know how that happened as we both have usage monitors so we don't go over. I Decided to e-mail Orcon about it, went into an argument with them through e-mail but didn't exactly get the answer I was after.

Ash.

I am noticing usage way over typical usage on the 9th , 10th , 11th and 13th. Have secure wireless with a strong password , waiting on Orcon to come back to me with a graph

Those days were quite low usage for me.

Travelguy: I am noticing usage way over typical usage on the 9th , 10th , 11th and 13th.

The 9th and 10th were o.k. for me, but on the 11th it jumped up from 1068.34 MB on the 10th, to 4169.44 MB on the 11th, then back down to 998.59 MB on the 12th. Not sure what that was all about.

EDIT: I should add that I'm on POTS plus Internet, not Genius.

Are you going to contact Orcon in regards to that?
I hope this gets sorted out as I don't want to pay $150.00 for this months usage

They also told me that we can request a data graph, but we cannot give it to you for privacy reasons. I told them there is no use requesting a data graph if I can't have a look at it?

Exactly, I just don't get it? They just kept telling me that the usage was "accurate". I sent them screenshots telling them this is how much data I have used also giving a 1 GB allowance for I guess miscellaneous data and told them to send me something that can actually back "accurate" up. But the reply again was that the data metered is "accurate".

Ok tell me how you go with the final outcome. With me they "currently have requested further investigation and will get in touch once they get a response".

Right now I don't think we can see the usage going through the Orcon genuis. I reckon they should create a usage meter at router level (integrated in firmware) so the users can see the data that's going through the Orcon Genius and we can get a more approximate estimate than this big differences.
