Phewsion: Has orcon moved their tech support overseas, as every guy I've spoken too sounds asian, and it's fustrating me to no end how much I have to explain stuff


I thought only the sales team was moving?


All Orcon Residential staff are in Manila.  You can only talk to New Zealanders if you are on a Business connection.

Here are my stats



Router is a Netgear DGN3500

We currently have a grey pole at the end of our 100 metre driveway and this connects underground to a ancient circular demarc point.

A look at the exchange map we are at the edge of the range from our exchange. We do ap[pear to be in a ADSL2+ area and VDSL cabinet does appear nearby.

Is there much we can do to increase our speed?

@ KiwiTT: You should probably start a new thread, as this is not related to the OP's issue. Include what ISP you are with, modem details, results of isolation test, cabinet area, internal wiring config etc.

There's probably almost one new thread a day started on this very topic. Have a read through some of the recent ones - use the search function, or skim through the various ISP and NZ broadband forums, and it will give you some ideas of where to start.

EDIT: and before johnr or plambrechtsen jump in, get a master filter ;-)

How do you do an "isolation test".

Just want to thank everyone who has given me help and advice especially RunningMan

Orcon are sending an engineer out on Monday to check the external lines and the box on the power pole outside then will look at moving me to Chorus Wholesale once the line problem is sorted,

I'll take CoffeeBaron up on his reply in regards to getting new jackpoints installed inside the house after Chorus fix the outside,

Since Fibre won't be in my area for god knows how long (Suburbs around me are getting it but I appear to be in a "deadzone") I need to make the best of what I've got :)


So Thanks again everyone, I'll post an update after Chorus have done their thing :)

Bit of an update, 2 weeks gone Orcon sent a tech to only look at line attached to pole, never came in
I decided to try DIY some stuff, pulled the jack points to bits and cleaned up the connections and trimmed the wire back to the cleaner stuff, Sorta fixed it, I'm back to what I was originally at in first post now





Think the only way to improve that is to replace the internal wiring

Is your attenuation stable now or still all over the place? It looks like you're still on LLU and will therefore be suffering from midspan injection.

I only just did all that this morning so I'll keep an eye on it for a couple days, and yeh I'm still on LLU the guys at Orcon wanted to sort out the line issues before seeing if I can switch to chorus wholesale I think it was

It's really a moot point. At the end of the day midspan injection is the issue. The only way to solve your problem is to move you to a cabinet, where you should be.

The cynic in me would point out that the price difference between Orcon providing you service over a ULL circuit vs a Chorus wholesale circuit is substancial and that there are financial motives for wanting to keep customers on ULL despite the degraded performance they will see.

Chorus sorted it today, according to Drfixit there was a fibre node between me and the exchange so the orcon provisioning team sent Chorus out to change it

New Stats



I find it weird how my upload speed actually dropped though, but 4x increase on download is fun :)
