deadlyllama: Quentin, can you clarify if the discount on the 100/50 plan is for the life of the plan, as long as one signs up while the discount is on offer, or if someone who signs up while the discount is on offer will only receive discounted service until the end  of 2013?

@coffeebaron - if everyone uses 9TB, then we have entered a new era of Kiwi web economy :) It is bound to be amazing.
@deadlyllama - I believe it is for the duration of the contract yes. Can I personally get UFB, no. :( Will Orcon have VDSL this side of Xmas, I am told yes. We are just sorting our CPE, making sure it works well with VoIP.

so big news.... http://www.terribletalk.co.nz/personal/fibre/ is offering uncapped fiber.

Why is everyone offering uncapped or free net now days?
Good to see DotCom join the party.

Ive been a supporter of Orcon for a number of years now, but with them removing the calling plan and phone services (unless I pay), I'm seriously starting to look at other ISP's and get VDSL and more data for less that what Orcon can offer it to me :-/

What are they thinking.....

Think this campaign is a diversion to hide the changes made to the plans ;)

But if I move to the unlimited plan, I lose the phone services etc and pay a lot more - a certain other ISP can give me a 80gb data cap (which is low but better than the 5gb I started with on Genius ;) ) with tolls and VDSL for less than you guys.

I still have some data left on my pack which will hopefully cover me until end of the year, so be interesting to see what Orcon can offer for VDSL, and if theres any other changes.

So does anyone have a summary of the changes - i'm reading we're basically seeing a price increase/reduction in features at the same price, and a big marketing campaign which is obscuring this?

I believe that all prices are the same as they previously were except some data caps have increased. However, you have to pay for the following two items on top that were previously included

Voicemail, Caller ID, Call Waiting + $4/Month ?
National Landline Calling (1 hr/call) + $10/Month ?

Imagine if they went to cost structure where they did away with fixed direct or indirect charges and just billed on usage. Do you think it would change people's behaviour?

Yes it would and it would have a big impact a lot of other services.

Example, who would want to pay for premium streaming services like Spotify if you had to pay for the data on top. Streaming TV....gone, why pay when there is DVB-T free. Why stream onDemand services, Netflix - nope, Hulu nope, Quickflix nope.

It would certainly change something. Think of all the accounts that only use a fraction of their cap. How would you recoup their current payment without charging a high per MB fee? Then listen to the squeals from the big users.

You would have to use the electricity model wouldn't you? That is, a line charge plus usage.

yes,  people would use heaps and heaps less.

consider how much food you eat at an AYCE buffett with how much you eat at an a la carte restaurant.  then imagine how little you would eat if the restaurants charged you by the forkful.

Thanks for your feedback guys.
We do listen - and will re-look at this.
In the meantime, I have a special Geekzone offer.
If you switch plans (between now and the end of business next Friday), just mention Geekzone, and we'll throw in National Calling and the smartphone features for free.
Hope that helps :)

Is that for new sign ups and existing customers (you mention switching plans)?

CSR told me it would be $139 a month for unlimited 100/50 UFB with calls and voice features included. This doesn't represent the $129 listed online, or the 25% discount being offered.
