Presumably a follow-up implementation to the plans he talked about last year?

To me, "first world" means fibre. Personally I'd be happy to pay a reasonable installation fee if it meant that I could get fibre in the next couple of months instead of when Chorus gets around to it. I live in hope, but expect to be disappointed :(

Canada has a data cap problem similar to ours. They too don't have first world Internet - ours seems to be better in terms of performance. Just don't have the links now.

Just received:

Orcon and Kim Dotcom launch campaign to rid New Zealand of data caps

Kim Dotcom and New Zealand ISP Orcon have joined forces to smash New Zealand’s restrictive data caps and fight the plight of third world Internet in New Zealand.

An Orcon customer for the past year and one of New Zealand’s most prolific Internet users, Kim Dotcom appears in a new campaign promoting Orcon’s uncapped fast broadband offer.

Orcon CEO Greg McAlister is pleased Kim Dotcom is supporting Orcon in bringing first world Internet to all New Zealanders. “Not only is he a valued customer, he shares our belief that uncapped broadband should be accessible to all Kiwis.”

Research from an OECD report shows that data caps are not the norm in other parts of the world with the UK, Europe and America having access to developed Internet services. However, New Zealand is at the bottom of the pile, lagging behind alongside Australia and Iceland.

Kim Dotcom says he believes that every New Zealander has the right to first world Internet.

“As an Orcon customer I fully support any offering that gives New Zealanders access to uncapped broadband. I am glad to be part of a campaign which encourages Kiwis to escape third world Internet data caps,” says Dotcom.

McAlister says Orcon’s unlimited plan is the company’s most popular.

“With the number of devices in the home increasing yearly, and bandwidth demands more than doubling every year, we think the writing is on the wall for data caps.

“Kim has challenged us to make New Zealand broadband even faster, and even cheaper – and it’s a challenge we have accepted. We are on a mission to ensure New Zealand’s Internet matches the rest of the first world. Getting rid of data caps is the first step.”

The campaign features Kim Doctom promoting Orcon’s unlimited broadband. It plays on the fact that even some Kiwis who live in affluent suburbs aren’t accessing first world Internet, with Dotcom saying, ‘every day, thousands of Kiwis are living below the global broadband line’.

Dotcom refers to ‘bullying corporations’ restricting ‘your Internet data just to make more profit’. Scenes of New Zealanders being interrupted half way through gaming or watching a movie online highlight how broadband capping is limiting our lives on a daily basis and that ‘it doesn’t have to be that way.’

Doesn't Orcon already have no-cap plans though? *confused*

Edit: You posted the press release just as I was typing that. Is there actually anything new here, or is it all just marketing?

It's called marketing.  Yes, they do, but this means they can tell us about them again.

Website has 50/100 UFB with %25 percent off ($30). But not sure if that is for the term of the contract or just until the end of December 2013.

so presumably they will be leading the way by removing the 30GB and 60GB caps they currently have, and making the $75 plan unlimited?

No.

You also have to ring to be moved on to the new plans (or so I've just been told by the CSR).  IE: If you are currently on the 60GB plan, you need to ring to get the extra 20GB of data.

I guess you will have to call so they can explain that the voicemail, caller id, call waiting, and National landline calling are now extras instead of being included. So unless you their website is displaying this wrong

Unlimited 30/10 with voicemail, caller id, calling waiting and National landline calling was $99 is now $113

Unlimited 100/50 with voicemail, caller id, calling waiting and National landline calling was $134 is now $143 minus $30 for an unconfirmed time.

This is not the unlimited announcement or price reductions I was hoping for, really it is a price increase. but I could be wrong as the website might not be working correctly and we would need confirmation from Orcon that this is correct.

Beware: if you change plan (and depending on the plan you are on), you lose free national calling.  You will also have to pay for the Voicemail, Caller ID, and Call Waiting features.
For me personally, the extra 20GB isn't worth it (even though Orcon currently isn't my SIP provider).

Your service commitment also resets for 12 months.  Your current service commitment remains if it is longer.
IE: if your service commitment date is in December 2013, your new service commitment date is this time next year (presuming you "recommit" now).  If your service commitment ends sometime in 2015, that will remain your service commitment date as that is the longer period.

All in all, there is nothing really new in this announcement IMHO.

PS: The above was confirmed by calling Orcon, and talking to a CSR (who in turn had to talk to someone in sales).

How ironic that as the US move towards data caps with many large ISP's now imposing ~250GB caps on "unlimited" plans that we're trying to move from caps to "unlimited".

I write this realising I'm living in an idealistic world, but it would be nice of the ISP's when they release these sorts of plans to have a plan comparison tool.
This is so you can compare the current plan with the new plan to see what you are gaining/losing and at what cost (IE: term extensions) at a glance without having to ring up and bug CSR's!
