for me, the choice of snap comes right down to the network and choices made there, their peering to be exact, and choice of upstream providers..

that makes a HUGE difference for me. im more than happy to pay for that.

then theres the support, CSRs i speak to, actually seem to care.

Not very much. They paid him 35k (which he donated to charity). 35k doesn't go very far in capacity

Snaps data packs are hardly expensive for the service you get too.

I have a 500gb data pack and the standard included with VDSL (fiber installed, going live in the next week) along with unlimited youtube and I never get anywhere near that, if nothing changes with our usage on fiber I will probably even drop to a 250gb pack.

And my usage case? Two people streaming netflix and 1080p content every single night of the week, not to mention downloading whatever HD content we want when we want to watch it (so not even using offpeak, we don't plan a single thing around it because we don't need to)

To top that off, I stream 860p@4.5mb/s for multiple hours every single night of the week to California with no lost frames and again, I get nowhere near my caps.

By the time you bring in the value of 1080p unmetered youtube that I quite literally have never seen buffer since I have been on VDSL and customer support so good I have stayed with them even after a new employee made a colossal fruckup with my account....

I vote with my wallet, I am by no means made of money, but paying extra for Snap is a no brainer when the quality of your internet and the support given when something goes wrong is such a big thing in this day and age.

Its like when people buy $700 laptops expecting them to last for years and years - you get what you bloody pay for and for a service most users of this site probably use 40-50 hours a week its a nominal fee to pay for rock solid internet and not having to wait twenty minutes for a transfer to Manila or New Dehli.

I don't think snaps customer support is worth paying extra for... it was good maybe 3 years ago, recently it's gone downhill.

Usually when I have an issue I get the typical "we'll look into it and get back to you" 4 weeks later I still haven't received a response, happened 3 times now.

To answer the main question:

1. 98% of my traffic is P2P, It'd be throttled miserably.
2. I don't want to be forced to use a locked down and questionable quality device to fully utilize my connection.
3. I don't have fibre yet but Snap are working on 50Mb fibre plans which will suit me perfectly when I finally get round to fibre.
4. As a person pushing 1TB of data on my previous unlimited connection my actual data usage has gone down significantly due to Unlimited YouTube as well as unlimited free data periods, I could almost squeeze into that 150GB bracket from using 1TB previously.
5. Snap support supposedly isn't as good as it was previously but I still like my chances far better than Orcon support.
6. Ive said it once and I'll say it again, Snap win at bandwidth, Hands down.

toaster: To me unlimited is quality. 150GB equals to 6-7 hours of raw satellite feed footage. Not really useful when you have 20 HDTV channel subscriptions.

My Orcon plan has had 100% uptime since day one 6 months ago, my only complaint is the international speeds are much lower than advertised.

Some quick calculations on the back of an envelope tell me that 150GB being used up in 6 hours is roughly 52Mbps -- sounds like utter nonsense but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and ask you what on earth you could possibly be watching that has a bitrate of 52Mbps?

For me SNAP works out cheaper then Orcon. My Company gets a SNAP discount for some reason.

So for $85, I get 350gb, unlimited download between 1am - 7am (which is what I have my downloads scheduled for) and unlimited youtube. So basically like an unlimited plan just without the speed caps based on my usages (tv and movie downloading during offpeak).

I actually moved from Orcon to SNAP. I had good connection speed on Orcon but during peaks times I couldn't even watch youtube videos. It would just always buffer, spent like months with the help desk tying to sort it out but they were useless. I was with Orcon for like 5 years and you can tell the difference from when they were smaller, great service and speed but slowly tarnished as they got bigger.

Just worried, SNAP remind me of Orcon in the early days. Great service and speed. Lets hope they don't turn out the same.
