They didn't give me a down and up figure just a general one I'm guessing

they said my attenuation is 2 bar 8

chances are the 8 is your upstream.

So what I have gathered from this thread is the customer doesn't really understand how DSL works.

it is quite clear you have had a 'proper' VDSL install. I would suggest any issues that you have with sync speed are in the local loop and not the internal wiring.

As for the modem, the VB104W works. It isn't fantastic but it does work. Slingshot manage their devices with TR-069 which gives them the ability to push firmware updates to the modem without bothering their customers.

But to summarise, we still don't have your DSL stats so it would be wrong to say whether or not the sync speed should be higher.

another thing to note is that vdsl has lower overhead than adsl, as it uses PTM rather than ATM, which mean sit has less framing overhead. adsl has a lot of overhead. enough so that my general rule of thumb is to divide sync speed by 10 when it'd be 8 if there wasn't overhead.

so 16 megabit vdsl should be faster than 17 megabit adsl. so it's probably going to end up being 40 to 50% faster just for download speeds.

and the upload thing probably won't matter for streaming - but you should be fast enough for streaming anyway - and it'll maintain the speeds better, especially if other devices are syncing, or someone is using skype. also some web sites do quite a lot of uploading when fetching requests etc. enough so that having more than 1 megabit upload speed could improve performance.

but generally speaking, in the real world, i think most of the time you're only looking at 20% boost in performance of things you notice. but some of the extreme cases of slowness will decrease. (such as if an iphone tries to sync it's videos or such)

i wouldn't be suprised if your download speeds have gone up by 800kilobytes/sec for nz content - but international probably isn't a lot faster.

Also remember if you are connecting via WiFi the speeds you're seeing will be about right. You need to connect directly, by cable, to get the full speed for most mobile devices
