"Timing of usage will change -- the 1am -7am offpeak usage will shift to peak times"

Totally agree with this, why would you schedule downloads if you have unlimited.

To be fair, as long as I can still watch Netflix in SuperHD I'm pretty happy, its about the only thing I do that needs real-time speed.

some not all.   If I was doing that, I wouldnt have any more bandwidth available to me for other things (eg streaming a movie would stutter and be terrible).  Sure I could pause the torrent when I want to do that, but that would soon get annoying so I would stop seeding the torrent.

there will be users who maybe max out their lines 24/7, but most users wont (thats a safe assumption IMO).

Personally the only thing that will change for me is not worrying about my cap when downloading a steam game and having to mess around with scheduling (which is a pita).  everything else will remain the same, ill watch the same amount of streaming services at the same times (which is most nights after 5pm).

Several things are going to happen.

People will stop actively minimising data use -  ie, watch the 1080p version instead of 720p,  or  update the ipods/ipad apps on each device rather than just on itunes. In the past, I used to manually download MS patches and apply to my machines (although I stopped that sometime ago because datapacks got big).

Torrent use may increase -- this is similar to leaving your phone off the hook, it ties up a lot of resource.

Timing of usage will change -- the 1am -7am offpeak usage will shift to peak times .

I remember when I joined on telecom jetstream (adsl) back in 2003 --- 2gb data a month. It was a real juggling act. Just 11 years later, look at where we are. Imagine 10 years from now.

to be fair, the previous data caps were high, around $100 a month go you close to 300GB.  People who did steam/download movies probably chose the format they wanted regardless of bandwidth.  sure there will be a few who think yay now I can download a 50GB full bluray rip instead of the 4GB 720p rip.  But those users will be few.  Most streaming users probably didnt choose what format, they let the bandwidth determine that.  eg if Im watching a movie on netflix, I dont restrict it to 720p, its adaptive, it streams in the format thats best for my current bandwidth, if thats 1080p with 5.1, sweet, it if has to drop it down to 480p every now and then, oh well.

if there are users who abuse this to extremes and do effect other customers, I have no doubt snap will step in and do something.  They say no shaping etc, but if theres 1 customer whos effecting 1000 customers, and theyre about to lose some of those customers, snap will do something.

But lets just wait and see how it goes first.  There are other ISPs offering unlimited, orcon have been doing it for a long time, chances are the biggest abuses are already on those other ISPs.

boykunk: Did you guys decrease data on all plans at the same price, just to make up for the unlimited plan?

I can recall that UFB 100/50 have 150GB or 100GB @ $110?

I think there was a promo a week ago said $95.00 at 100/50(UFB) for 100G data, is the new unlimited plan backward?

Will the reduction in data caps for the existing plans be applied to existing customers or only for new customers?

I signed up a few weeks ago for 24m on the $85/m VDSL naked which at sign up was 100gig/month.... and now it's down to 80.

It was $95 for 100/50 with 150G on 2 year contract (having signed up for this myself). I personally would like to know how much extra it would cost me to upgrade to unlimited (ie would I keep the $15 base plan discount or am I looking at at $44 jump in price?)....

@tanivula your plan will not change unless you change it. Consider yourself grandfathered.

The unlimited plan will just make me lazy - I used to queue downloads between 1 and 7am but why bother doing that now ?

SamF: Thanks, didn't see that.  Hmm, in which case, I fear for my Internet performance :/

Time to hunt for a new ISP...

...and move to another ISP who offers unlimited?

When will people get it through their heads that by increasing data caps performance will not change.

As an unlimited user I am still going to be downloading/uploading at the same speed as I was when I was on a data pack.

Move to an ISP without an unlimited pack.

The issue isn't you, it's the super heavy users who saturate all the ISPs bandwidth.

We have been here before.  Just ask WorldxChange (failed), Telecom (failed) and Slingshot (only if you hate yourself do you use Callplus)

Hi all

Some great feedback on here (some positive, some not so much - clearly with such diverse opionions we're not going to keep everyone here happy!)

Just to reiterate - existing customers can stay on their existing plans (eg old Lightwave Home with 100GB data), the new plans apply to new customers or existing customers who choose to change. There is no automatic migration.

While we love our new Unlimited users, as a number of other GZers have pointed out, we're actually a bit late to this party so many of the heavy users will be with the other guys. And the really price sensitive have other options as well. So we don't think we're going to be inundated with every user upgrading to Unlimited. Its been interesting to note that since the launch we've  still seen plenty of Lightwave sign-ups at the 2 lower data cap options.

For those of you that have signed up recently to the "Best for Less" Lightwave Ultra promo - if you want to upgrade to Unlimited you can, we'll honour the $15/m discount of the base plan. So your new rate would be ($139-$15)= $124/m.

Cheers
Ralph

Question for Snap, can users who are mid-contract change? I am one of these and have just received an email telling me to change but I couldn't see if this would be allowed with my current contract.

Yeah, but this time, we have 5 major ISPs offering unlimited at the same time.

I'm sure everyone is hopeful that this time will be different, and given the positive outcomes of open weekends in the past, I'm sure Snap have done research. It doesn't change the fact that some will be nervous, having suffered with previous plans, in saying that, my experience was with another provider.

It's great to have unlimited, been subscribed to the YouTube add on since the beginning, and have always scheduled backups for the 1am-7am time slot.

Whats this $15 datapack you speak of?
I see $10 and $20 of additional data, but none are even close to $15 for 100gb? Or are you referring to the old plans?

Hmm, I am on a grandfathered plan, but didn't realise that datapacks were grandfathered too(?) How much does the $10 pack give you?  My lowest option on the datapack list is $15 for 100GB.

Im talking about additional data, not the various data tiers that you could change in the sign up form with the slider, that can't be changed as easily without calling up and having your plan adjusted.

Here are the additional data packs for if you run out, much higher priced as they seem to be intended for precisely that, getting you back online at high speed.

Thanks Snap. Thanks Ralph!

So easy to change to unlimited. Sent a message via Geekzone and it was taken care of for me.
