I have a request.

Could somebody please suggest a decent offshore (preferably not Australia) test file (not a "speedtest", an actual file), and even better, tell me what download speeds you are able to obtain for it?

I was able to obtain about 5MB/s today - from four seperate multi-segment downloads from different servers.

I am getting a 1GB test file from:-
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/download.html

And getting 9.22MB/s from UK

Another test files from LA USA running at 11MB/s:-

This is my result from downloading from the same LA server.

This has been fairly typical of the speeds we have been able to obtain in the past few weeks. (in fact, it is on the high side).

Btw have you check what pfsense cpu load it's like while downloading?

Also check if there is any error log in System log from booting as well as normal operation, this might indicate you have some sort of hardware fault or some hardware about to crap on it self.

1%. It's a Core 2 Duo.

I can get ubuntu from citylink at 11MB/s no problem.

1%. It's a Core 2 Duo.

in that case it's sounded more and more like line setting, have you thinking about down grade the plan to 30/10?

from post above someone said they have the same issue with 100/50 but not on the 30/10 from Dunedin, maybe worth a shot?

The issue sees to be resolved now. However I am on Vodafones Cable network.

Does the issue persist for you guys?

I am in New Plymouth and this page took about 45 seconds to load.
All of my traffic is down to around 8kb/s, so my VOIP phone is now useless (as well as internet being un-usable virtually).
snap tech support said there is an issue, but they aren't sure of the details, and that they hope to resolve in a few days.
I had asked whether they knew if it was a network issue (not snap's fault) or whether it was a snap fault, and he had to pass on that.

BTW, I'm synced fine with VDSL. I can't even load the www.speedtest.net page - it just comes up with an error after a while saying can't load coz my connection is super slow.
Pinging NZ websites in the cmd prompt gives consistent results around 0.8 seconds (yes, 800ms).

Such fun, lol.

there was a fault awhile back, where a handover point along chorus's network was causing issues at peak.

this took maybe about a month or two to resolve as there was a fair bit of testing to insure where the problem area was.

the snap NOC guys are likely very aware of your issue and working hard on it, having dealt with them personally Im pretty sure of this.

Yep, I'm having the same problem with Snap (naked VDSL) through their New Plymouth handover. Been going on for about three weeks now, severely degrades (i.e. dropped from 29 Mbps down to 0.33 Mbps and 500+ms ping to Auckland, on one night last week) to the point of just being unusable almost every night. Have been told it's an issue with Chorus and that they're working on it, but it seems to not be a huge priority for either party.

Guess Chorus have us over a barrel, as I assume most ISPs would be using them (although I'm unsure if any other providers are having the same issue in the New Plymouth area). Would be keen to know, I love Snap - but won't hang around if this keeps up (or... down).

I am in New Plymouth, on Snap UFB 100/50, and I get an average of 4.5MB/s for the UK download file, and average 8.3MB/s for the LA USA file.
My gateway is: 111.69.17.16
