Hi all,

Just wanted to ask, as anyone else noticed a dramatic drop in internationa speed over the past week or so?

We are on 100/50 fibre (New Plymouth), and up until about a week ago we had for the most part fast internet anytime, and to almost anywhere.

But this past week, anything international has taken a huge nose dive.

Some examples:

Local Speed Test

Sydney

Los Angeles

Ubuntu download from main mirrors (not NZ mirror)

Not long ago, I could almost always get 8-12MB/s for an international download (multi segment download). Now I'm lucky if I can get 1.5MB/s

Is it just us, or is this Snap wide?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

i dont often look at speedtests, but my own servers as they are often far more reliable (given they have tweaked tcp stacks)

certainly seems to be no problem here hitting max, to the Netherlands.

also worth watching out for, i tried testing to exactly the same server as you are using, however that seems to redirect randomly to different servers - in retrying a few times i varied from citylinks mirror, to servers in Sweden.

oh. and speedtest..

Ild highly suggest looking to Dreamhost in LA, as that server window scales very nicely, unlike some of the other testing sites there.

I've 30/10 with Snap UFB in Auckland. International speeds seem normal.

This is the same fault I had on Snap 100/50 in Dunedin
Local speed tests great and anything international requires multiple connections to even get upto 1MB/sec where randomly there will be no issues at all and works perfectly

Sorry to say but they never fixed it after multiple attempts at contacting people and getting it sorted

Moved out of that house now and plan is transferring away from my name to my ex (But going to 30/10 as they don't appear to have issues there)

Things have been fine for months. Then Last week some day things just started going much slower.

Might shut down the pfsense box during dinner tonight to see if reconnecting to the network makes any difference.

Had this exact issue a few months ago. Go into your fritzbox menu, click on system --> event log --> internet connection and see what POP you are connected to. I forget which one I was on but it turned out to be incorrectly applying traffic shaping and so they changed me to another and all was well again. I was seeing the exact Syndey and LA speeds that you are seeing now. (100/50 plan in Chch here).

I don't know anything about pfsense but if you can't find it and you still have your fritzbox, I'd urge you to connect it and take a look at where I've suggested and report back with what the POP is for your connection. I can't remember what the old one was that I was on but I'll remember it if I see it.

totally dependant on the server your downloading from.

assuming the server isnt incorrectly setup and doesnt window scale, absolutely, international speeds can push decent speeds, on a tweaked tcp stack, this can be even better.

heres a test to my webserver in LA, single threaded, maxing my line happily.

i was looking for an example of a badly configured server to show when things dont scale, but seems im failing to find any! (although notably default stacks are far slower at scaling.)

i wouldnt look to speedtests to give a real world idea, of your download performance...

skewt, I live in Dunedin (on the 100/50 plan) and I had the same problem you had, slower than normal speeds to speedtest server in ChCh, slow to Wellington, slow to Sydney and other international speed test sites. I logged a ticket with snap! who looked into it, they were aware of slower speeds from Dunedin to ChCh than normal and they resolved that. But I still had the slow speedtest results to Wellington and other sites. In the end I gave up pestering them and figured that it would resolve itself eventually or I would switch ISPs when my contract was up. That was back in November 2013.

Fast forward to 12th May 2014 and the speeds suddenly were greatly improved. I did nothing at my end so I logged another ticket with snap! asking if they had done anything to improve speeds. They were unable to let me know of any changes that had resulted in the speed improvements. It's weird, but I'm happy that speeds are back to what they were when I initially got UFB.
