I would beg to differ. You expect cheap prices AND super good service. Telecom companies aren't exactly rolling in profits.

Come on. Spark made $323m last year. Vodafone has made its own bed and posted losses because it bought TelstraClear and rolled out 4G, while 2degrees is still in the phase of paying out for its network. Vodafone were doing well before they spent $800m on Telstra. And they all have terrible customer service, profit or loss. The only positive thing about any of these companies is when their services work you never have to call them and experience it. The next best thing you can expect is a) to have a service that actually does what you pay for, and b) not to pay through the nose for it. Expecting both of those things isn't unrealistic.

PhantomNVD: Agreed!

In my case I'm keen to 'upgrade' to a monthly plan with 2D, for the increased death primarily, but if as they won't transfer my 'banked' minutes, or trade them for data even when I'm signing an UPWARD contract i just can't justify doing so.

In my case, I have around 1000 minutes banked, and am planning to go 'naked' at me next home, so want to keep the minutes even though I currently don't use many of them.... Isn't that the whole POINT of rollover??

Seeing as how I built it ... pretty sure your carryover minutes from the prepay combo get carried over to postpay. :-)

Well the 'nice lady' on Helpdesk told me otherwise... Can I take that as a guarantee and upgrade with the understanding that "Salty said so" ? 😄

*death on original post was meant to be 'data' BTW!

Please PM me your number and when you called us. We may need to have a word with the 'nice lady'.

If 2Degrees does lead the way in doubling the data to 1gb in their $19 plan, that would be enough to push myself and pretty much everyone I know, over to 2Degrees. It would be huge boost for their customer base. Data is far more sought after these days than calling or txts, for the majority of people. Especially with 4G networks, it's like having a Ferrari with no more than a driveway to drive it in.

True, but do you think the others wouldn't quickly follow suit anyway?
TBH I think something that allows me to swap minutes for data would allow them to keep their 'thin' margin too?

Allow customisation, charge what you need to for each option, and let the customer pick their 'plan'.... Everyone wins?

As per above, anything 2degrees does at minimum Skinny will follow. If its a standard thing they can offer easily (eg pushing up data) then the bigger telcos might follow if they are bleeding customers.

On the flip side, more 'complex' things like trading minutes for data, or carry over believe it or not are things that people often need explaining to them. However in advertising raw numbers (eg bigger plan allocations) have a wider marketing impact - and thats a difficult place to compete due to the slippery slope it can be if they go toe to toe with one of the other providers.

Indeed. Skinny's sole reason for being appears to be so Telecom can compete directly with 2 Degrees, without devaluing their main brand. Anything 2 Degrees does, Skinny matches, and lowers the price. Right now they seem to be at a bit of a stalemate.

Where's skinny's rollover data offering? No one competes with 2D on that,

Rollover data is of questionable value unless there is surplus data to start with.

At this point I think it starts to be a race to the bottom  and usually results in staff being layed off to pay for it as Spark is currently doing..

I disagree, unless of course you pay overage or switch data off for the rest of the month.

If you buy a data pack any new data allocation is banked until said data pack expires or is fully consumed

I find it hard to believe that many consumers happily use exactly 500mb of data a month, even banking 50mb a month adds up

Pretty sure offering 1gb for $19 isn't in there best interests at all. Im currently on a $69 pay monthly plan, primarily for the 1.25gb data (almost 1 year into a 2 year contract, will be downgrading the plan soon regardless). If they were to offer 1gb data on a $19 plan i would immediately cancel the plan and pay the break charges, saving $50 a month it wont take long to pay that breakage fee.

Considering how much data ive banked over the last year i don't even know why im on such a plan, i welcome such a move from 2degrees.

All giving us 1GB on the $19 pack would do is decrease their ARPU.  Doubt they want to do that.

Without 2degrees' market entrance ~5 years ago, we'd still be paying through the nose for using our cellphones.  For that reason alone, I'm happy to support them by being a customer.

I use around 1.5gb per month, so generally have 20 or so that rolls over. Not really worth it.

Instead of bumping the data in the $19 pack, why not offer more expensive plans which include more data?
