Yes it is quite funny when Microsoft scammers call saying you have a problem with your Windows computer and you go along with them until they ask you to click on the start button on the bottom left of the screen and say I cant find that as I am running Ubuntu and the start button is on the top right of the screen. They hang up fast then. But seriously though as Athlonite said it is better not to have your number listed in the phonebook. I changed my phone number and have not listed it after the last telemarketer rung me and I have not had a telemarketer or scam call since and that was about 4 or 5 years ago.

Not having the number listed doesn't mean much. They can just have a program to start calling from 555 0000 through 555 9999 and only transfer to them if answered. This would costs nothing for them.

I think if that is the case then everyone in NZ would have receive some sort of calls from them.

So there must be a list they are going thru.

I am talking about the "listing on phone directory is bad" assertion.

In your specific case it sounds like (as per your previous comments) that they're kind of doing a follow up on your registration to some service or another.

You can screen out, or even block out these calls using the 2degrees customer portal, just login and click on the phone number then login to the call manager - you can pretty much make up your own rules including time of day.

I've logged into the 2degrees portal but I don't see call manager?

are you using a fritzbox and VOIP then use that to block numbers , set times , send certain numbers to answer phone or my favorite ,divert certain numbers to a made up phone number.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

That's brilliant - I salute you. I will have to remember that one for next time.

I had a series of the Microsoft scam calls (about 2-3 a week). Last time they called me, I led them a merry dance, pretending to be a sort of confused semi-imbecile who didn't understand this "computer stuff" couldn't understand how I could possibly be showing up as having a virus on their system, and who were they again?

The punch line, after yanking their chain for the best art of 10 minutes, was when I finally said "but how can I have a computer virus when I don't have a computer?" I got a shouted series of expletives and they hung up. They haven't called back in over a month.

I had a +44 number ring my mobile today, due to this thread I didn't bother answering. They left a 3sec voicemail which I assume is just a hangup, nothing important can be conveyed in that timeframe.

I haven't signed up to any scammy websites, so wouldn't be surprised if they were just dialing numbers in order.

There is a different scam going on where they call and hung up in hopes you call back, at a high price per minute.

Now days I silently answer and put the phone on mute or hold and walk away. I may as well tie up their resources as long as possible to give the rest of the world a moment to two of respite.
