You could at least try the Wi-Fi, especially if it's 5ghz. I easily pull 300 down, 200 up on Wi-Fi.
That could then indicate whether it's an ethernet issue..

OK, so the Orbi routers just max out at the 200ish mark too, using the FritzBox and the same cables that came with it, so I don't think it's the ethernet card in my Mac. It could be the ethernet cables (replacements arriving) or the Fritzbox, assuming the ONT is not limiting the speed (which is I think what Nick's investigation has shown).

Pretty sure MM had one of these working fine at speed...

Yes the Orbi seems pretty fast - as fast as my wired connection. I've not worked out how to replace the FritzBox with it (as per BYO Modem https://help.2degreesmobile.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/196/~/what-settings-should-i-use-for-byo-modem%3F) as I don't know what my password is (unless it's the same as my online account login, which doesn't work) to see if I could eliminate the FritzBox as being the issue.
Does anyone know how I can get my password so I can try to use the Orbi as my only modem?

Same account, If you login via website with Joe.blogs@snap.net.nz then it's the same on the router. Customer care can help clarify if needed.
Nick
Sorry to be a pain about this but I didn't get it to work. My website login for my broadband account is 'joe.bloggs" my Fritzbox has "joe.blogs@snap.net.nz". I have used both "joe.bloggs" and "joe.bloggs@snap.net.nz" on the Orbi with the same password as the website and neither seem to work. What am I missing, or am I just not leaving it long enough to connect? The password on the Fritzbox has fewer '*" than my actual password has characters, is that normal, or is my password different?
Thanks

Spyware: Are you tagging the WAN interface with vid=10???
This was the issue, thanks.
With the orbi connected directly to the ONT I'm getting faster speeds, 3-350 down and the upload can be anything from 50 to 250. My suspicion is either the ethernet cables or the ONT is the slow place....

I would say you are wrong on both assumptions.
I would suspect you're right @spyware

Next variable is the NIC and it's driver. Another computer to try would be good.

any ideas of where the problem may lie then?

As per the previous suggestions and threads, trying another Laptop, Nic Drivers and directly connected via a cat6 cable into the router.

I have (sort-of) tried that as the speed limit is the same on iphone, macbook air, macmini and even the orbi (which uses speedtest.net). I'll borrow a windows pc at some point to try another wired connection though.
