"...support from engineers here on Geekzone."

Isn't this an admission that there is a problem with the official support system for these ISP's?

LOL. No. It's an admission that ISPs are known to employ geeks.

N

That and when you have hundreds of thousands of customers occasionally things go wrong. At that point it's helpful to have people rather than systems to rely on.

So the general consensus is that I will have a battle on my hands if I should have an issue with our MyRepublic internet connection?

As per the many threads on this subject... yes. There is a reason everyone tells you to stay away.

More than anything its more then deceptive behaviour to “win” that speedtest award, bumping their 100/20 people up to a gig for several months and then chopping it back

One of my compulsory IT papers at Wintec was on ethics and professionalism and this clearly breeches that

Not to mention the ongoing battles with them seemingly deciding the TSO isn't something they need to pay despite legal obligations of them (and other providers in NZ) to do so.

We were bumped up two years ago, but have not been chopped back to 100/20.

We have good reliable speeds with no dropouts, so the only reasons to jump ship would be because their trouble shooting system may not be the best and some of their corporate ethics may be suspect?

The first time they “won” this award they also upgraded everyone to Gigabit for a short time - once the award was won they downgraded those people again back to 100Mbit and scrubbed all traces of their “promotion” from their social media pages. If a larger provider did that then advertised they were the fastest I’m sure there will be a full blown commerce commission investigation.

Just wanting to quickly chime in at this point as it seems to be a common suspicion that we've subsequently downgraded the group of long-term users we moved up to Gigabit for no charge. If you have an example of this as a current/past customer please send this through to me, because as far as I'm aware this was not the case. Unless the user has made a plan or address change since they were provided the free upgrade then they should still have it applied. While one of the initial free upgrade rounds from a few years back was initially planned to be for a short period only we received enough positive feedback from the users that we decided to extend it indefinitely.

We do have a Facebook team, though I'd personally recommend using them more for general inquiry type questions such as billing or payment updates, plan changes etc. If you're on the "gamer" range of plans with us we do have a dedicated team that offers Discord-based support (in addition to the regular channels) for those who are after assistance from a more technical side of things.

I've seen a lot of the negativity around My Republic, but I chose them because they are reasonably priced and have Google Wifi support (no VLAN tagging). I did have to pay $8/mo for a static IP so that CGNAT doesn't interfere with Plex though. $108/mo for full speed fibre is pretty decent. Their speeds in reality might not be full gigabit, but they are pretty decent.

LOL! "Google wifi support".... that's awesome lol.

Considering they sell "gamer" plans with super duper fast latency and amazeballs speeds, I would of thought that they would absolutely require a tagged UNI port, otherwise how else are they prioritising traffic all the way down to the customer?

Voyager will sell you Fibre MAX for $99/month with a static IP and even IPv6 if you ask. Ohhhh.... but no "google wifi support" hahaha....

You can get Google wifi working on any RSP with a cheap mikrotik in bridge mode, 1 port VLAN10 and 1 without

Yeah but that requires extra power and I don't have enough room in the cupboard in my garage for anything else.

Having your main access point in a cupboard out in the garage is probably the reason for so many people having a bad broadband experience.
If you have your main AP somewhere more central then why wouldn’t you have the mikrotik there too?

But just because you've got a large user-base on Gigabit UFB now because you "gave" it to them doesn't make MyRepublic the fastest ISP like the advertising claims... This just shows MyRepublic was indeed gaming the system by bumping their subscriber base up to faster plans.

Well actually they'll give you "Google WiFi Support" if you ask (not specifically for "Google WiFi Support" but for no VLAN tagging which they do on request).

How is it "gaming" anything if they gave free, so far assumed, permanent speed upgrade to users?

I don't defend them from the customer experience/support/availability of service as I don't know anything about them, but bashing a company for giving a free permanent upgrade is taking it a bit too far.

@HEPBO3AH Speedtest announce these "awards" at the same time, every year for New Zealand. MyRepublic gave everyone a speed boost for initially a short period a couple of months before this. This raises their average (see https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=165&topicid=275715&page_no=1#2557781) - they "won" the award, used it for their marketing and since then have encouraged everyone to be on faster plans via marketing also. I mistakenly thought they downgraded all plans after this (as my old neighbor was one who got downgraded however he did move, and this likely had something to do with it) and am happy to be corrected here.

I know how little investment has gone into their network (I do know many, many people in the ISP space) and do not at all support the level of false advertising knowing first-hand the investment that goes into an ISP's networks to provide the best experience to customers - things like peering, international connectivity etc. I know people who have moved away from MyRepublic to bigger providers like 2degrees or even Spark who have seen night and day difference in speeds, latency etc. Calling themselves "the fastest" is a stretch at best and I personally see this as blatant misleading / false advertising. I've had many people ask me about MyRepublic because they heard they're the fastest which is indeed false.

So yes, this is gaming the system. I'm also going to call you out on your edit as just remember (us moderators) can see your edit history. I do indeed know what I am talking about and I can also still speak my mind even if I am a moderator on here.
