If only Spark would just peer freely :)

Thanks so much for your help as always @pwner. Work has been so much better today.

Going by the traffic that CDN serves in the past, next time there is a big game update it will turn to crap again unless 2degrees sort out some n x 100Gbps links to Vocus for domestic transit as it is very spikey.

Overall it is really a case of Level 3/Footprint/Centurylink/Lumen being a bit clueless about the NZ Internet topology. I would have expected them to at least host a node at Vocus to serve the open Internet exchanges in conjunction with a node serving Spark and their direct customers.

We have reached out to them to try and sort out a direct connection, we will see how we go

Strange - back now (kinda). Just had a period of slowness for a bit. I really notice it as I work through a VDI :)

Pretty good today.

I'm having issues with video games (Path of Exile) at peak times, the game server is located in Sydney I think, pinging one of its IP's shows a packet loss of ~10% from 6pm - 7pm
IP: 159.23.73.31

Looks like no capacity left as my download speed is 800+ outside of peak time.

@ShaggyMop All ISP's have issues. This is only a peer to Spark that is having issues because Spark refuses to play well with others (always been this way). My work VPN goes via Spark so I notice it more than many others.

For the average person you wouldn't notice and 2degrees are normally pretty onto it for solving such problems. 2degrees has solid connectivity otherwise so join away.

If you play video games I would wait till after lockdown. The packet loss makes games like Path of Exile unplayable.

Please don't ever post misinformation like this on here. There is no packet loss currently and Path of Exile isn't even on Sparks network. What you're seeing is a fully unrelated problem not specifically with 2degrees that can happen with literally any provider. Packet loss with pings is normal as routers do not prioritize ICMP traffic over their normal routing activity.

I wouldn't say misinformation though might not be strictly related to the original topic re Spark but I have seen issues in the past that affect gaming from time to time again with Vocus links used for infill / non-peering Aus domestic traffic. The return route from that Softlayer cloud host / Path of Exile server is via 2d's other Vocus links.
