yitz:

On the desktop browser, open Developer Tools, Network tab and record the host names and server addresses being contacted for the relevant requests.

Are you having trouble loading the user interface or streaming performance?

Thanks! The interface is loading fine, it's the lo-def stream which is buffering every second or so on the off chance it starts playing at all. Usually I'd expect a solid 720p stream. Not end of the world as based on the past couple of days sure it'll be usable again tomorrow for a few hours.

Hope I've copied the right address...

Not sure if that provides any additional info? Maybe I can compare with a similar trace tomorrow when it's working again to see if any obvious differences?

Ping time seems on the high side, I'm getting 278 ms round trip to that IP from Christchurch (not on 2degrees).

There is an outage on the Indigo West cable which carries a significant amount of traffic between Europe and NZ. Looks like 2degrees upstream providers are doing some re-routing but it is possible there may be some constrained links.

That's good to know. The content I'm trying to download is back to it's 20Mbps this morning (trace is the same as what it was at sub 1Mbps) so as long as that pattern of it not working but then returning again continues, as a short term workaround at least, it's ok by me.

The issue with the the Indigo was also mentioned on TPG Australia. Looks like maintenance until Monday the 18th of October.

BBC iPlayer has been constantly buffering every 10 seconds or so on my 2Degrees Ultra Fibre connection for about a week or more now, making it completely unusable. This is happening with Roku boxes and  Win10/Chrome using DNS4me. A friend sharing my DNS4Me account has had zero issues with his Spark Fibre. I see others have been affected. Is there an ETA for this issue to be cured which I assume is due to slower routing than usual?  @pwner I'd sure appreciate your input.

Just looking at that Internode Advisory, it looks like they have extended that maintenance period out to Tuesday the 26th of October.

When it's high latency..... Jitter, packetloss and tcp algorithms make all the difference.

Here is just a random test with load on the network.

Would not surprise me if this is a combination of the indigo cable work, along with 2d picking up what seems to be a primary upstream.

I am getting quite good download speeds now but my upload speed is pathetic.  I am on Vodafone.

Same including direct download from get_iplayer.

If if helps at all I've found downloading for offline use in the
official iPlayer mobile app (using dns4me DNS on the Wi-Fi) seems fairly unaffected, decent speed and doesn't time out. You can then cast to a device (you mention Roku, I have Android TV) as long as you can update it's DNS to dns4me too.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious and I know it's a workaround rather than a long time solution 😀

I found it bad tonight. What I dont understand is that for planned outages (assuming it is the issue) surely there is other paths they can take in a more planned manner. There are cables everywhere these days. The other thing I take issue with is the total lack of acceptance by the ISP. Surely we all dont need to be tech experts to understand all this. Not sure why we need to subscribe to another service as an interim solution.

I can't say I feel the same love for 2Degrees that I once had. What with the major broadband outages 2Degrees had a couple of weeks ago, and now this routing issue lasting over a week,  that other ISPs seem to have got around, I can't see myself staying beyond my contract period which is now costing me more than elsewhere. I was also on pay monthly mobile for 10+ years with 2D and they never fixed the dreadful sound quality of calls cross net, and took ages to even admit there was a problem. Sad really, as they put the cat amongst the pigeons 10+ years ago. Rant finished.

@Spong every single ISP has outages from time to time end story and this routing issue is not 2d but a upstream provider

The call quality issue cross-net is not acceptable and very close to being sorted

I know previously it's got better for a few hours only to get worse again but seems back to full speed now.

iPlayer 60Mbps download which is what it was before the issue.

Fingers crossed!
