nztim: I would not place a Windows 8 PC on the internet, it has not had critical updates for years and will be exposed to Malware

To be fair, the OP said Win 8.1, so only earlier this year. Still not a good idea though.

@stick @Linux @Delorean

@nztim you're right about potential malware issues with older versions of Windows, and that's why I bought a Windows 11 PC earlier this year, when Microsoft withdrew support for 8.1 (not years ago, as @RunningMan points out). Still, transitioning from Windows 8.1 to Windows 11 isn't straightforward for me, so it's a work in progress!

I'm pleased to say I have identified the cause of my slow upload speeds, with the solution summarised below from https://www.elevenforum.com/t/upload-speed-very-slow.13506/page-3

My Windows 8.1 PC has a Killer Ethernet card and a utility called the 'Killer Control Center". Once I disabled the Killer Network Service, upload speeds were fixed ...

... thought I'd mention it here in case someone else hits the same problem in future.

Thanks again for all the very helpful advice,
All The Best!
