Other websites still work ok. Rapidshare and megaupload don't.

There are several gaming mods that will download at 50-70 k per second from any other site but will crap out and never finish if I try to download from rapidshare and megaupload.

What the F*** is Orcon doing choosing where I can download stuff from ?

Yes -per account shaping would be preferable in this situation.
The way they have done it really pisses me off as I spent ages checking whether something was wrong with my setup / router etc.

It seems likely that Orcon is putting the freeze on additional expenditure, hence the somewhat 'creative' tactics to try and improve performance for the majority of users during peak hours. Obviously it has the side effect of alienating the minority. On the topic of creative tactics, I still don't understand why they haven't incentivised off-peak downloading by charging less for it... especially since the traffic that sits at the bottom of their priority list is precisely the sort of traffic that would be reduced during peak hours as a result. Either they take a small hit to their revenue and retain customers and reputation, or they start bleeding customers and losing reputation for as long as their current policy persists. If you picked option B, give yourself a smack upside the head for being short-sighted.

Seems like money is all that matters in this business... no ISP has really executed on innovation and creative service provision in recent years... only the ones that have money to throw at things like bandwidth provisioning seem to be making any headway in consumer satisfaction. I guess the brain drain really is as bad as they say.

Not really surprising given loses Orcon and Kordia made last year, I don't imagine this year will have been much better. Guess we will find out later this year in June.

Ragnor: Also remember this: You are "paying" for a residential bandwidth service, there are no speed gaurantees no SLA agreements. What you pay doesn't come anywhere near the cost of provisioning international bandwidth at 1:1 with your sync rate to your exchange (if that's what you're expecting). I have a feeling most ISP's in NZ provision residential DSL with a 100:1 contention ratio rather than the 20:1 or 50:1 you see in the UK.

Strictly speaking, I think those numbers and the typical use of the term 'contention ratio' are associated with exchange backhaul contention rather than congestion over international links. Back when backhaul congestion was a problem (it may still be in some areas for all I know, though I doubt it), figures of around 100:1 were bandied about quite often. Peak international performance isn't quite as bad now as peak national was back then for some of us, so I suspect the international contention ratio is rather more kind than whatever the backhaul contention ratio used to be, though at the same time hard to put your finger on, what with all the traffic management strategies being applied.

As much as I scorn the apparent inability of NZ ISPs to innovate on quality of service... I sympathise with them on the tightness of the bounds in which they must do it. If the government wants to invest in telecommunications, it should be asking itself whether it can do anything to encourage someone to have another trans-Pacific/Tasman cable laid (as a private enterprise). Pretending to improve NZ telecommunications performance while ignoring its biggest bottleneck is folly of the worst kind.

I find downloading from RapidShare fine for me, but even better is MegaShares, I almost always get 950KB/s peaking up to 1.3MB/s (that's bytes not bits), which has the negative effect of causing me to use up 19GB in 2 days (I have a 21GB data limit - changes to 51GB on the 23rd).

For around $45 for 6 months UNLIMITED downloads (and a site that I don't think has been included in the shaping), MegaShares is a very good deal - plus you can search all their files directly on their site which is extremely useful.

Snap customer here.. no problems with RapidShare (Premium Customer)..

Average around 1300kB/s constant.. Snap Pro FS/FS.. bit less during peak as expected, with many kiwis using the international bandwidth.. circa 800kB/s average.. but i never download during peak..

I use flashget to run my d/ls between 2am and 5am

I agree with maxnormal. Orcon did not use to but now almost always uses their "traffic shaping" as an excuses for not providing enough international capacity. I think their attitude towards customers has changed from "wanting to provide best broadband experience" back in the older days to "we stated that in T&C so just live with it"

shaping rapidshare and megaupload is really hilarius.

Web browsing is fast as it's prioritised so it's generally just as fast during peak as it is during off-peak, at the expense of some P2P and file sharing.

Web browsing is fast as it's prioritised so it's generally just as fast during peak as it is during off-peak, at the expense of some P2P and file sharing.

This is simply untrue. Try downloading a large file over http or https at 8pm and then try it again at 3am...

I do this, and I also have long run stats testing a website speed (my photo host in the US) from my home Orcon connection... Speeds drop in the evening and are FAST from about 1am on (all the way through until 3-4pm usually)

But I can DL at 1.6MB/sec offpeak from international HTTP / HTTPS sites, and from the same sites during the evening I get only 200-300KB/sec. The sites being tested are not under load and are not themselves under bandwidth constraints at any of the test times.

This peak time slowdown is not related to the LAP from the ISAM either as speed tests to national sites during the evening can still max out the link (1.6MB/sec)

This is still pretty damn good really - but it's inaccurate to say that on Orcon, Http speed is the same during peak as offpeak.

I do a lot of photo uploading, especially during the evenings after an event, and the upload speed is always pretty much line rate... I get 850kbps upload to smugmug.com whenever I like.

New issue with rapidshare, my connection to rapidshare is just dead now, it was downloading and then just stopped, now if I browse to www.rapidshare.com it won't connect.

Browse thru a proxy - anon browse and it connects fine so rapidshare.com is not dead, orcon must simply be blocking it directly now.

Happened at 9pm on the dot.
