Aaaanyway, I disabled DSDS in the Field Test Mode menu, and 5G now works! (@MaxineN) Woo! Best part is that enabling DSDS again doesn't change that - 5G still works. So if I ever want to do the dual-SIM thing, I guess I can, without affecting 5G.

So the only thing that doesn't work still is WiFi calling - doesn't really bother me though, I never planned to use it.

WiFi Calling is only critical for me if roaming... but I suppose if I am roaming.. I am on holiday and everyone back home can wait :)

Nice to know and see a Sony phone actually do more than basic LTE....

Maybe the future is looking brighter...

Gidday SaltyNZ, my wife's OP6 has Volte provisioned greyed out. I tried switching to NR/LTE and calls ceased working but 550 SMS worked but told lies. Phone can do it, but no profile sent. Can this be fixed? Does retailer matter eg if she switches to Electric Kiwi with 2degrees backing it, same or different? She's low income and it's the fanciest phone she's had, a handmedown from a mate of mine. Glad you're trying to avoid the Aussie sh*tshow but that's how it looks to be shaping up, ha ha. Outcome will be the same whether by force like Aus or by lack of support like now. Can lineage and forcing the phone to lie about its identity work? Or imei spoofing isn't possible? Excuse my partial ignorance. :-)

There are NO OnePlus phones listed here:

https://www.2degrees.nz/help/mobile-help/calling-features/phones-compatible-with-volte-and-wifi-calling

So it seems even if it was a local buy it's not on 2 degrees current radar. Future plan? Maybe.

As @Linux says, VoLTE is supported on all the MVNOs. You might have trouble with custom firmware though; typically only the stock firmware will have the right settings for it. Having said that, I'm not an Android person so I don't really know what the state of play with LineageOS is.

It’s up to the manufacturer to include the VoLTE profiles in the phone software. The oneplus 6 was released in 2018 and software updates ceased >4 years ago. Who knows if they will provide an update? I guess you need to ask yourself is it likely? I think some of the newer Oneplus models might have the VoLTE profiles from memory. But you need to confirm that yourself.

@FredCookeNZ The issue is the handset was not a local buy / purchase from a authorised retailer

You can walk into PB tech right now and drop 2k on a top of the line OnePlus if supporting the CCP/PLA is your thing, but not listed on that page. Maybe it would work? Maybe you just lost 2k? No oneplus listed and yet definitely locally buyable. List is either flat out wrong, or there's a travesty in play.

A chap I worked with years ago saw my comments here and sent me some info. I'll try out his instructions and report back.

As for the wannabe comments, I know. On forums since they existed. You lot are far too civilised. The closest I can get to the death threats and vitriol of days gone by is fb groups, but the types that do it don't last, ha ha. So nostalgic.

PBtech are already in the com com eyesight about selling phones without disclosing VoLTE capabilities

That's a parallel-imported handset, as it's not sold by the carrier. No guarantees as to how well it will work (or if everything will work).

To play devil's advocate, could it be a bit like buying a plug in hybrid before the RUC legislation was changed? Sure you can still buy one, but would you want to?

And if you're none the wiser, is that the retailer's fault, or the customer's?

Little bit different, I think. The hybrid still works just fine. (Personally I think for most people they're the worst of both worlds, but that's nothing to do with RUCs). Anyway: this is a case of the device is not fit for purpose after some date that the retailer is fully aware of, but is at best neglecting to make clear to the customer. There are some words to that effect (if not those exact ones) somewhere in the CGA.

IMO any phone with an unclear VoLTE status because its not a telco supported one should have been flagged as such on the product description from the data that 3g closure was announced.

We are now annoyingly almost back to where it was in the CDMA days where a phone has to come from the telco to work. VoLTE has clearly been driven by the telcos to get their skin back in the game for hardware sales again with how bad the provisioning of it is, and only Apple seem to have had the spine to stop it from becoming a mess. All the others are still quite happy to trot out telco specific varients and softwares to help keep the telcos in the hardware game.
