Duncan,

Is there any plan on having the data blocks not expire for 6 months or so?, I didn't mind having them expire in the past as it was cheap, but now the price is close to other companies that don't let the datablocks expire.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the feeedback. It is something we have considered, however for the moment we are concentrating on expanding the O Zone to encompass more sites. We feel that giving users un-metered access to the content that they want is more valuable than data banking or off peak data periods.

slayer123: I haven't received my email yet... Have the prices of the data blocks changed too?

Edit : Just recieved my email... Data blocks went up!! Yell

We adjusted the price of data blocks both on Orcon+ and regular Orcon connections, so now data block and overage pricing is the same across both. Some of the data blocks actually got cheaper in the process. We also introduced new smaller data add-on's for Orcon+ customers (5GB and 10GB blocks, previously the smallest was 25GB) and a 200GB data block for the power users among you.

FYI, the new data block pricing (for both Orcon+ and Orcon broadband connections) is:

5GB for $8
10GB for $12
25GB for $25
50GB for $50
100GB for $80
200GB for $160

what was 50GB previously?

Im trying to work out what my bill will be now, only i cant access orcon from school.

i love how orcon left out what you were paying previously datablock wise in the email, just a notifcation of the new price only

50GB was 40$
100GB was 60$

Got the email this morning. The email itself is a bit of a mess though. The plaintext part talks about changes to some business account which I don't have, and which their mailmerge then got all confused about ("Your current IP address is 25"). The HTML part was okay though.

Just got this email from them, was a bit of a surprise to say the least, never like it when something doubles in price.

Orcon did this when they first started with ADSL also, with their unlimited plans 256/128, they got loads of people on it, then decided it wasnt sustainable.. Seems they either don't learn, or someone isn't very good with a calculator at Orcon or as someone pointed out is just a marketing ploy by them.

This ozone crap sounds like a waste of time, 5 silly sites.
Perhaps they need to add sites like youtube, megaupload, rapidshare etc then it might be more popular hehe

But yeah, seems a lame attempt to try and convince people they are being nice while actually giving very little.

As people have pointed out, other ISP's are offering free offpeak traffic, and now Orcons prices are basically the same and with nothing like that..
Perhaps as someone suggested, discounted offpeak hours would be an idea.

Is this the way things are going to go in NZ? just as things seem to get better, a doubling of the price occurs.

Though I won't go as far to say I'm leaving orcon right now, will definitely be looking at other ISP's and asking questions, Orcon doesn't quite seem so sweet anymore, there also seems to be no incentive to be on their network either especially when missing out on cabinetization. PLus their caller-id doesn't work and I still get one way calls sometimes.. moan moan...

Well a doubling of the price deserves a rant.

ideas on where to at least look for another ISP? anything better out there now?

For me personally, Im happy to pay the "Premium" as Ive had no issues (downime or otherwise) with Orcon since joining.
Joining an ISP that has a lot of "features" etc to me means potentially more points for failure etc.... but each to their own.

Yeah... this is important to note. I've stuck with Orcon because of this. Though I have to say things did get much worse for me once I was on the Orcon+ network.

Had the tech out 3 times in about 4 months, and they left me with no internet for almost 2 weeks during that time. Also tried to say it was me... though I think this was a contractor. After all that I made them switch me to a new port and things have settled down. Though apparently Linksys modems don't play nice with the ADSL2 hardware they have, that is pretty strange to say the least.

My point is, they are degrading their offering. It's nice that they have good CSRs when you have a problem, but you do have to talk to them, cause there are problems. If that is the only thing that is keeping me there I'm not going to stick around.

The extra $5 is ok. It's the overage that is harsh - that's a 100% increase! That's insane.  Why not make it $1.20?

"...we've realised that some of our prices simply aren't sustainable"

Yeah... not many people can do maths so bad they need to double their prices.

I joined up with them 1 month before they pulled that stunt. Of course back then, I believe it was either a 12 or 24 month contract and it came with a free modem.

When I asked the sales guy whether that plan was here to stay, I was assured it was so I signed up. Shortly after I got connected, we got an email giving us 30 days notice and was told by the helpdesk that they wouldn't waive any disconnection fees.

The replacement plan wasn't too bad - same price, same speed, and 40gb worth of internet... but that was besides the point: they were signing up customers into minimum term contracts onto a plan they intended to kill.

After that negative 'bait and switch' experience, it would take a lot to bring me back.

Duncan, does Orcon have an Akamai mirror and is this part of the "O Zone"?
