MrEnmity: Signed up cause this post caught my eye.
The other day I requested the Local Steam Content Server (recoil.net.nz) for game downloads/updates .. and suggested considering some of the international.
I also asked as to why all national traffic can't isn't simply free, as it once was on some ISPs.
Received the following response, which may answer some of the NZ based bandwidth remarks:
"With regards to your question about why there is a charge for NZ based bandwidth, the simple answer is because we have to pay for it ourselves. I'm unsure of the exact reason for why NZ bandwidth use was free in the first place, but I believe it was because a couple of ISPs in New Zealand (not Orcon I'm afraid) peered the data locally. The reasons why those ISPs stopped doing so I can't really comment on. I imagine it just became untenable to continue."
Kris89: I would like to see free or heavily discounted data between orcon customers, if not all national data. I assume that things like p2p and direct download (rapidshare etc) use a good chunk if not a majority of orcons international traffic, and that the price of national data is a pittance in comparison.
Now if there was free or cheap (eg 10c/GB) data between even just orcon customers, then there would be alot of incentive for heavy users to grab their various p2p and other files over something like a DC++ hub run by other orcon users. As well as potentially saving customers' money, this would greatly reduce the load on orcons international links (saving orcon money amirite?).
Extend this to include other ISP's and add some half decent peering and the internet situation in NZ would become a whole lot better IMO.
Currently tvnzondemand seems like the only thing in the O-Zone that would save more than a 1GB/month![]()
bazzer: You're aware the O Zone doesn't start until 23rd May, right?
