If you don't know, the "8" is a very sought after number in Chinese cultures, because it sounds like "Prosper". I can see why 2 Degrees would auction a number of all "8" in it.

They never answered me if they are giving the recipt from the charity or if they are selling it and donating what it sells for so keeping the deduction for themselves.

richms IANAA but my understanding is that you cannot claim the donation.

To claim a donation you need a receipt from the charity, and here the charity is receiving the donation from 2 degrees.

You are not making a donation - you are paying for a SIM card, and 2 degrees has pledged the proceeds of the auction as a donation to the said charity.

You can probably claim it as a business expense if applicable, but not as a charitable donation.

I'm sure 2D will claim it as a donation (after deducting expenses of listing the auction plus paying an employee to maintain it ;-).

Our Trademe auctions finish up tonight. We'll keep some other numbers in the vault for future initiatives and business opportunities but we recognise some of the gripes you've had around us only opening up the 0220 number range. Rest assured we are opening up a stack of other ranges soon and we'll let you know when we do that.

Hi 2 Degrees, I have been excited for weeks waiting for your launch and a few things have really disappointed me. No - it's not to do with Jeff going down. That I can easily forgive as a teething problem.

But you guys were so communicative prior to launch, and then suddenly seemed to disappear to your launch parties leaving noone behind to man your Twitter/Facebook/Geekzone sufficiently. I know the parties would have been exciting but it was a disappointing oversight, especially given how good communication and hype had been pre-launch.

The "10 million numbers" broken promise is to me the most disappointing aspect though. For weeks we had been waiting in anticipation to "snap up our favourite number" as had been promised to us pre-launch. I'm not after anything special but my dad really wanted to have his home phone number (which starts in a 4) as his 7 digits following 022.

"That won't be a problem dad", it has been promised, and I was sure that noone else in NZ would actually want his desired 0224 number as there is nothing special about it.

However this 0220 and "selected number ranges" change of policy has really soured the launch for us.

If there was a vote then I would agree with Ahmad. I also wanted to use my home number for my mobile, but instead (had to) chose my existing VF number which fortunately is 0210. Limiting the available number so much and reserving all the good ones is just wrong.

"Underpromise and overdeliver" comes to mind here (for the wrong reason).

I still welcome 2 Degrees, but I was really amped for launch and I almost thought it would live up to the promises.

I too was disappointed by the 0220 business although I never paid much attention to what they were saying except that you were supposed to be able to choose your number so wasn't sure they hadn't made it clear this was the plan.

One thing I will recommend for 2Degrees, come up with a way to 'let people know'. When I asked, I was told to check out Facebook. You've also said you'd let people know. A simple thing like an e-mail list so that people don't have to keep checking out your website, Facebook etc and can just wait for it would help a number of people (or at least me).

However I think the 'no one behind to man the Twitter etc' was somewhat justified. There were a whole load of teething problems after launch, obviously the website thing, SMSes not being received (although I believe this was partially resolved via Geekzone anyway), other things I forget and likely a whole load of questions and help sought via e-mail and phone made even worse by the broken website and other things like the 0220 thing (I myself e-mailed to see if I could get any more info about when the rest would launch). Without defending 2degrees for these teething problems, I think giving priority to the more conventional means of support is justified. While Twitter/Facebook/Geekzone can be a means of support and can reach a fair number of people, in most peoples minds, they remain secondary to phone and e-mail (heck e-mail usually remains secondary to phone) and I suspect 2Degrees have stated or implied as much. In other words with such a bucket load going on and wrong, I think it's understandable these got a lot less attention until they had the resources to devote to them. From what I can see now (I never paid much attention to the website came back) they're handling Facebook and Geekzone fine now. (Don't Twitter.) And from what I've heard, support from the more official means has been okay. Not brilliant and many problems have taken a while to sort particularly with porting but they've usually been fairly responsive and e.g. called back when they promised. Don't know what call centre wait times are like only thing I heard is 10 minutes which isn't bad but may not be representative. My two e-mails have been in 2 workings days or so. (I still remember the 1-2 hours waiting times I had with Vodafone's Internet division i.e. Ihug around this time last year and to emails to Vodafone in general taking 4 weeks!)

Of course, perhaps they should have had more staff in the first place but that's always a coulda shoulda woulda thing.

P.S. Anyone else noticed people are selling a lot of numbers on Trademe now? Some of these they either got very lucky, had someone in 2D or spent ages looking thorough shops to find them I guess since they aren't 0220. Others are 0220 so I'm guessing someone just hopped on the website as soon as it came back and changed numbers to ones that looked good.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean provide support via Twitter/Facebook/Geekzone.

But there were no statements/updates/communications provided via Twitter that I know of, and very very scant updates on Facebook and Geekzone.

Where were the updates such as:

"We are having teething problems - please bear with us"

"Jeff has been broken - we are working on it"

"We only have 0220 numbers at the moment but ... "

Hi Geekzoners,

In closing this thread - the total raised in the auctioning of 85 numbers out of our number range was just over $65,000 with all proceeds going to the Kidscan charity.
For those of you still wanting to change your current 022 number over, keep an eye out over the coming weeks for some more ranges which will be made available through the Your 2degrees section of the 2degrees website.
