Interesting. I'm noting port 80 traffic as especially affected. Traffic on other ports seems to be slightly better (no use if one is trying to surf the net, though).
Note also that youtube performance is acceptable.
This leads me to conclude that Orcon's upstream providers have different types of traffic on different circuits and that some circuits are completely overloaded.
Just got off the phone after waiting 28 minutes for a response to my helpdesk call.
Transpires that the reason I have not heard back from the detailed ticket+data I provided is because it was still in the general heldesk queue and hadn't been moved into the "diagnostics" queue (where it is now, with 14 other issues from other customers).
Suggestion: when requesting detailed network data and stats, that requires attention from the people checking the "diagnostic" queue, that the reply-to address requesting this info should direct the replies directly to the correct queue.
Either that or somebody should be checking the support queue DUH for diagnostic replies. Sometime. This. Decade.
Just got off the phone with Orcon. CSR told me to go to Speedtest.net, and after waiting a couple minutes for it to load (yeah, was that slow), did a couple tests. Results were normal, my line speed's fine, but things were still slow.
So he told me to unplug all my phone jacks and he performed a line/POTS(?) reset. Speeds are back to normal now... for now.
I'm having similar troubles. Seems to have only started in the last week and is getting worse. Browsing to say TradeMe or OneDay is nice and quick but Google or gmail takes quite a while BUT not always.
As for online gaming....well I end up swearing a LOT
Speed seems to vary quite a bit over a short space of time.
I ran a bunch of speed tests one after and the speeds bounced all over the place.
While the speed tests got better browsing was still horribly slow right after the tests. Couldn't get into gmail for instance.
From my router:
Data rate: 13718 down 1031 up
SNR: 12 down 11 up
Attenuation: 18 down 7 up
So no idea what going on really but it's annoying to say the least.
Hervard: International speeds went down the loo over the past hour, but I think they're better now.
I also had the above issue during the same times last night, and im in Wellington.
I've also had a ticket open with orcon for nearly a month, living under 1km from the exchange on the adsl 2+ llu down here, and my internet is barely usable at peak times, 18mb/s otherwise.
I hope orcon sort their shiz out! I wish we could go back to Telstra cable :(
Well I got a reply to my email to Orcon about slow international browsing etc.
I was advised to do a bunch of checks to isolate whether or not I have a faulty ADSL filter and check my download speeds using the speedtest.net server in Christchurch.
Sigh
Because a faulty filter will slow down traffic only from overseas and only after about 5 or 6pm lol
When my voice recovers from this cold that I can speak I guess I'll have to call them since they seem to have trouble with reading comprehension :P

So despite one of their T2 network engineers being pretty responsive, the conclusion is that the degraded performance we are experiencing during peak times is to be expected.
This is directly at odds - as I have communicated to them - with the connection prior to this situation.
Something changed a couple of weeks ago, and Orcon aren't saying what (if they know).
