There are lots of other people affected by their lack of SMS interconnects, not just Vodafone UK and Vodafone IE customers. They only support SMS to the top 21 desinations, that's a around 180 less than Vodafone or Telecom. As 2degrees grow they are certain to grow this list considerably.

Are you implying that Telecom/Vodafone supports SMS to 201 countries (i.e. 180+21)? Please do provide a source for this info as that number seems grossly inflated. A friend did some tests with SMS to various European countries when 2D launched last year on all 3 networks -- and he found that even VF and Telecom had some networks with SMS issues -- including not working at all in both directions.

Anyway, I understand VFNZ's concern that they might be seen to be blocking 2D from making an agreement with VF in other countries -- which I believe is not true. But it is quite interesting to observe that in many countries VF operates in, 2D has managed to make an agreement with many (if not all) of the other non-VF operators but not VF itself. Now I wonder if the situation would have been different if VF did not have any operations in NZ...?

There are only ~195 countries in the world so the simple answer is no! :-)

My understanding (and I do stand to be corrected if proven wrong) is that both Telecom and Vodafone have 2 way SMS to every (or very close to it) desination network they have a roaming agreement with. If you read my other post on how it actually works, you'll note that I have pointed out that the issue is primarily with networks with which the operator does not have a roaming agreement with*. That's true for us too.

*But it's also true that a lot of networks also require a separate billing agreement for SMS, even once the technical capability has been tested, in order to open up interoperator traffic.

International SMS has never been as reliable as national SMS. I resort to other methods such as messenger or email or Twitter.

So for those having problems with not getting texts back fro Vodafone Ireland or Vodafone UK you can either:

1) Do what 2 Degrees say and harass all your friends and family in Ireland / UK to harass Vodafone IRL / UK

or

2) Just switch to Vodafone NZ or Telecom NZ and get on with having a proper 2 way connection

I know which one is easiest

And also the most expensive at 30c/txt.

I wouldn't mind international text bundles, even if they were pricier than national ones.

I will ask my own contacts what reponse they have received from VF; I'm guessing none, or they will have been told that 2D is the problem. Yawn...

My brother had the following response from VF Ireland when he enquired as to why his txts were not arriving at their destination -

Response back from Vodafone on the matter implied that they 'allow 2degrees messages to filter through to Vodafone customers' but that they cannot guarantee that messages sent there will be received by that network because 'they will not allow it without an agreement'

Take from that what you will. Are they implying that VF are indeed sending the messages and that 2D aren't receiving them? Or just more BS...
