BigHammer:

Why is the fact that I got one of the free SIMs at launch barring me from registering? Is this a glitch or am I seriously going to be excluded from this offer?

Actually, I have no idea, sorry. Might be worthwhile having a chat with Customer Services. The "I didn't get my validation code" stuff I can investigate - to the point of ruling out my bits as the borked ones anyway - but that one is completely outside my area. And I don't know whose it is!

Also it says to enter your mobile number in the field, but nothing happens till you tab away from the field, you can hit enter all you like and nothing gets sent.

I'm not sure why these smart alec web hackers write this sort of code.  Who really cares if the number is your number or not.

I wish they'd just write simple pages for this sort of stuff.

I eventually managed to sign up with Chrome.  That site really doesn't like ie6. :(

i don't know anyone who likes IE6, most are just stuck on it because their work IT department can't fix up some silly custom internal web page that needs it so the whole company is stuck on a very old version.

IE9 beta should be out soon, i think that shows how old IE6 is.

Any posts are personal comments and not that of my employer

Nonetheless you still need to ensure that your site is compatible. I know of at least 3 people (non geeks) who still use the default browser ie6.

Ie6 does not like transparent PNG's which kinda shows it's age...

Just to follow up on my comments of yesterday, I did tweet about the accessibility issues and a very helpful custoemr service rep from 2Degrees called to assist me through the form.

That's good, but the site needs to be accessible.

I don't like or dislike IE6.  I use it at work because that is what we have to use.  It's not a case of "can't (i.e. won't) fix up some silly custom internal web page", we have literally hundreds of internal and external apps that are business critical.  To test a new browser against all those apps is almost an impossible task.

I'm sure we'll eventually get upgraded from IE 6 but I suspect it won't happen except as part of an upgrade from XP Pro to Windows 7 or 8 or something.

Tasks like upgrading our 200+ servers to the latest version of Solaris, upgrading exchange and migrating windows servers to the new virtualised server farm are far more important than upgrading a web browser that does work for our business applications.

Unfortunately it's the harsh reality of corporate life, you can't do everything and some of these things are so big it's hard to justify for the limited business benefit.

Not having non scripted stuff is inexcusable IMO.

Trademe manage to make everything work on every browser, and that is a site that has to do a hell of a lot more than 2 degrees one.

the 2 degress site is an unnessacary mess of complexity. remember that when it launched it told you off if you dared to use the back button or open things in new tabs? Its still bloody slow too.

For a telco that is claiming to be friendly and different, the site sure is not.

Anything new on this, it's all gone a bit quiet? I registered on the first day but haven't received anything

Would be interested to hear about possible handset launches too now that VF have announced the Samsung Galaxy S on top of the Nexus 1
