Hi Gareth (CutCutCut) based on you exact location I would have said you are more like 1.8-2km of street distance from the exchange not 2.8km, hence well inside the exhange area.

The fact that you are getting 38dB rather than say 24dB means there is either a bad joint out in the street feeder, or your house wiring has issues (which I understand you have sorted), or the cable infact takes a dance up the street and back down to your place, which is probably more the issue this would easily add an extra 800m.

That all said you are achieving just on 9Mb/s, so its unlikely you will get much traction from Chorus to fix it.

What about VDSL2 upload speeds? Are they affected as much as the download component in terms of distance from dslam? I cant find much info/ calculators on the internet about VDSL2.

Hi, yes upstream is effected with length, with VDSL2 downstream spectrum is 138k-3MHz, and 5-7MHz, while upstream is 3-5MHz and 5-12MHz depending on setup parameters, 25k-138k(US0) can also be used for upstream if requested.

So obviously with line length increase both down and upstream are effected as the spectrum for each is scattered throughout the band, although downstream being at the higher end will fall off first.

I understand Telecom are aiming at profiles to support 40/15 service which should be achievable for lines out to around 600m although speeds greater than that may be acheived closer I presume there will be some connection speed cap implemented further up the chain.

Longer lines will obviously have lower rates, once your sync gets down to 15/5 you can lodge a service call.

Thanks Cyril for having a look at that. Wow, I didn't realise that amount of extra cable could be used to loop around the roads before it gets to me. I'm pretty confident the wiring inside is pretty good now, (except for a hard wired filter) and it's much better now than before I rewired. And being on the exchange does allow us to st stay with Orcon+ which we're happy with. They did have to replace a section of cable along our driveway when we first moved in as it was water damaged, so there's probably a few more joins than would be ideal. So all in all pretty happy but still get pangs of jealously when i see speeds of 15-18 Mb/s!
So obviously Chorus use a straight 'distance from exchange' measurement to determine cabenitisation? Do they use some sort of other line quaslity calculation also?

Anyway, interesting stuff, thanks for the input.

Hi, cannot comment exactly how they calculate cable distance, I doubt they go through all the records to get real cable length, rather some % over street distance.

Dont forget that in the old days of POts only when the area would have been subdivision ed and/or the cables run out they had no care for cable length (within reason) so to have a cable wander up and down a street in a non direct manner to meet an convenience or facilitate a growing subdivision is pretty much the norm.

You say "except for a hard wired filter", so is there one or is there not.

No there isn't one yet. I've exhausted by current budget ($ and time) for the next wee while, but it's on the list to do.

Well after all my complaining and sending chours out 3 times to the road side cabinet 40m away from me, no changes made to my house wiring, modem or computer..this is what im getting.

Good one, sounds like your persistence got you moved to the cabinet, as to if you should have been their in the first place or not is something I guess we will never know.
