How long do you think it will be before Telecom introduce an "0867" prefix for texting 2 Degrees :)

This text race seems to be a way to increase interconnect revenue.

Has anyone done the maths on whether it is worthwhile signing up to texting bundle to send yourself 10,000 texts?

I could program my IDEOS to send them :)

I think telecom is doing double texts at the moment, so you get 5000 for $12.  You would also need 2 XT SIM cards so by my calcs you would be up for an outlay of $100 (2 SIMs at $30 ea and 2 $20 topups to buy you the texts).  If you already have the SIMs / credit then this would be cheaper.

Depends how they interpret "or otherwise than in accordance with the terms of this competition". Given that they're already ruled out using any computer or 'other device' (then a mobile handset) my guess would be they'd consider programming a mobile handset to send text after text to not be in accordance with the terms of the competition. However IANAL nor do I speak for 2d.

Apart from being excluded from the competition, I would be worried about having to pay for all of the texts. All of those bundles seem to come with the proviso of "person to person texts". I'd say there is a fair argument that these would not be counted as person to person texts, therefore, you should pay for them.

The article didn't specifically say that the X5 was under $500 - that was in reference to the LG Optimus One (P500).

However, the Optimus One doesn't look too bad either (just slightly slower with a 600MHz processor, lower res cam, display etc...)

Mmmm we were considering the Ideos U8150 but was put off when I heard the camera was not very good [as far as mobile cameras go] however according to gsmarena the LG P500 will offer the following advantages video @ 18f/s, a 3.2" screen and a better battery

Interestingly when I popped into the new 2degrees store in Wgtn the sales person was trying to convince me the ideos U8150 will be able to be upgraded to Android 2.3 !

Thanks for the feedback. The guy in the shop should have told you it 'probably' can't be upgraded to 2.3. Of course if there are fixes they will be sent over-the air.

The article does actually say that both are under $500:

Mobile operator 2degrees is predicting the start of the "smartphone wars" as it launches two new handsets that cost less than $500

Wonder if the X6 is coming too, that does look good
